Caricature Book Kickstarter!

February 22nd, 2018 | Posted in News

I usually do not promote crowd-sourcing projects here, but as my artwork is involved with this one and part of the proceeds go to a very good cause, I’m making an exception. Caricaturist (and recent Golden Nosey winner) Manny Avetisyan is looking to produce a very unique book via Kickstarter that gives fifteen people (and five couples) the opportunity to be subjects in the book, getting drawn by as many as 27 (and possibly a few more) of the best live caricaturists on Planet Earth. That’s right, YOU can be one of the models, with page after page of caricatures of YOU from a massively… READ MORE

NYC Workshop Sold Out!

February 19th, 2018 | Posted in News

The workshop in Atlanta went well if you discount my mistake of calling in the catered lunch order to a Subway in Forest Park. My mom can make sandwiches faster than that and she’s dead. Otherwise lots of fun, drawing and learning! My workshop in May in Long Island City, NY is now officially sold out. Don’t worry, if you missed out get on the waitlist and you have a decent chance of getting a spot… I almost always have at least one person drop out for one reason or another. It costs nothing to get on the list and any open spots will be… READ MORE

February 16th, 2018 | Posted in News

My caricature workshop in Atlanta starts today through the weekend. It’s a little bigger group than usual as I added some people who either were supposed to be in a second one I had to cancel, or who won a spot in an auction to benefit the International Society of Caricature Artists. Let’s draw! There are still some open spots in my scheduled workshops in Chicago, Long Island City, Las Vegas, Minnesota and Los Angeles if you want to participate in this unique learning experience. Reminder to Join My Mailing List!

February 13th, 2018 | Posted in News

I get a lot of people who tell me on Facebook of Twitter or wherever that they didn’t hear about this workshop that just happened close to them or that limited edition print or whatever until it was sold out, and wished they had as they would have liked to participate or get one. It seems some folks only occasionally visit the intensely riveting and regularly updated “Tom’s Mad Blog” rather than visit every day twice a day… who knew?? Okay, 99% of my posts are time wasting stuff, but sometimes I do announce something you might actually want to hear about! How do you… READ MORE

Another LA Workshop added in November!

February 9th, 2018 | Posted in News

Due to popular demand I have added another LA area workshop in November. The dates are Nov 9th-11th, and it will be held at the same location I did the two in January, the Pop Secret Gallery in Eagle Rock, right by Pasedena. The January ones sold out very fast, so if you missed out before or are interested now, don’t put off placing a deposit for long. As of this morning, I still have ONE spot left in my Chicago workshop, three left in the Long Island City workshop, and lots of room in the Las Vegas and MN ones that don’t happen until… READ MORE

Mort Walker: 1923-2018

January 27th, 2018 | Posted in News

Caricature of Mort by me from the 2007 NCS Reuben Weekend (held in Orlando) art Comic strip legend Mort Walker passed away early this morning. His health had been deteriorating and he’d been hospitalized with Pneumonia recently, so we all know this was coming. The National Cartoonists Society has a nice write up here as does writer extraordinaire Mark Evanier here. Mort was, of course, best known for the long running syndicated comic strips Beetle Bailey (started in 1950) and Hi and Lois (started in 1954 with Dik Browne). By the way Hi and Lois is actually a spin-off of Beetle Bailey… Lois is Beetle’s… READ MORE

If anyone is considering traveling for one of these, the workshops I hold in MN are unique in that the Friday part of the weekend is held in my home and studio. You get a real look at my illustration process as I demo my inking and coloring in the actual space I work at and with the tools I use everyday. You also get to see a lot of original art, both mine and ones from some incredible cartoonists I’ve collected, get fed and watered… READ MORE
