Give Me Two Days and I’ll Show You How to Draw Terrific Caricatures More Confidently Than You Ever Have

“Imagine being a country singer and getting to attend a workshop with Reba McEntire”

Imagine being a soccer player and getting to attend a clinic with Lionel Messi. Or being a country singer and getting to attend a workshop with Reba McEntire. Well, for anyone who loves the art of caricature, getting to attend a workshop with you is akin to being with the best of the best.

-Todd Tuttle. Los Angeles 2025

“As a beginning artist, I wasn’t sure I’d fit in but whether you’ve been doing caricatures for twenty minutes or twenty years, you’ll learn a lot…”

I loved Tom Richmond’s workshop. As a beginning artist, I wasn’t sure I’d fit in but whether you’ve been doing caricatures for twenty minutes or twenty years, you’ll learn a lot through his blend of live demonstrations and encouraging one-on-one instruction. My caricature skills improved measurably over the course, and I highly recommend the workshop for beginners and professionals alike.”

Benjamin Radford, author of ten books including Bad Clowns – Las Vegas 2017

This video was filmed, created and edited by one of the students for my 2017 Pittsburgh workshop, Greg Feinberg. Note: Things have evolved over the years since that video was recorded in 2017. My workshops are now 2 days not 3..

“As a total drawing newbie, I was blown away…”

“I’ve attended and delivered many workshops in the corporate world of my past, but none was better than the learning experience Tom provided in Dallas. His teaching methods were top notch. He personalized the workshop with one on one critiques, ample Q&A, live drawing exercises and an overall vibe of fun learning. As a total drawing newbie, I was blown away and had a fantastic time. I heartedly recommend the workshop to rookies, as well as to experienced illustrators.”

Don Gallager, Dallas TX 2018

Portland Workshop 2019

“My drawing literally improved the following day when I worked a wedding doing live caricatures, even other artists commented on the change.”

“’I’m an experienced professional caricaturist, and attended Tom’s workshop in Dublin in 2023. My drawing literally improved the following day when I worked a wedding doing live caricatures, even other artists commented on the change. Tom clearly explains and rigorously tests important concepts like “presence” and I know I emerged a better caricature artist. Highly recommended for professionals and amateurs alike.”

Allan Cavanagh, Dublin Ireland 2023

If you’ve entered the world of caricatures, you may have already seen my book on how to draw caricatures called The Mad Art of Caricature: A Serious Guide to Drawing Funny Faces, which is now considered by many to be the gold standard for instruction in the caricature world, with over 37,000 copies in print.

OR

You may have heard I have been drawing most of the movie and TV parodies for the iconic MAD Magazine since 2000, which is how most people know of me.

I could tell you about my credentials like:

  • Winning the “Golden Nosey” twice for “Caricature Artist of the Year” from the International Society of Caricature Artists,
  • Multiple divisional awards from the National Cartoonists Society, OR
  • Receiving the NCS’s highest honor, “The Reuben” for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year.”

But what many people don’t know about me is…

… I started my career drawing live caricatures at theme parks (many years ago).

It wasn’t long before I managed teams of artists and taught new artists how to draw caricatures. I helped hundreds and hundreds of nervous, eager young artists transform into confident caricaturists. Many have continued as successful caricature artists for years afterward.

Since I began teaching artists over 30 years ago, I’ve never stopped.

I’ve always loved teaching and being a “cheerleader” for my students.

That’s why I began this two-day, in-person workshop. It’s my ultimate labor of love, meticulously designed so you leave:

  • Confidently drawing your best caricatures yet.
  • Knowing you had a one-of-a-kind experience learning from a leader in the caricature industry.
  • Feeling like you got WAY more value out of the workshop than the price you paid.

But more importantly…

I want you to leave knowing caricature is accessible to you, even if you’re a complete beginner.

Which is why I have an important message for you…

Glasgow Workshop, 2025

You Don’t Have to Be An Experienced Artist to Take This Workshop!

Not sure if you have the drawing chops to take this class? Most of the 750+ past workshop students felt exactly the way you do right now before their first workshop – nervous and unsure about attending.

“I learned so much and the intuitive and personalized feedback from Tom about exactly where and how I could improve was priceless.”

“If you get the chance to join this workshop, TAKE IT!! I feel so lucky I could learn directly from Tom and an impressive amount of technique and in depth knowledge was distilled over this workshop. It was such a special and fun experience and we received individual attention and critiques tailored to each of us. I learned so much and the intuitive and personalized feedback from Tom about exactly where and how I could improve was priceless. Not to mention the two absolutely wonderful personal caricatures that are the envy of all my friends! Can’t wait to take it again.”

Marie Krueger, Denver 2019

“My friends noticed an improvement in my artwork almost immediately.”

“Tom’s Workshop was amazing, and it is a great value for everything that you will learn. My friends noticed an improvement in my artwork almost immediately. Tom is entertaining, and a heck of a nice guy. He teaches insightful, easy to comprehend approaches to improving your skills. If you love caricature, it is an investment you owe yourself. ”

Peggy Meyerhofer, Eagan, MN 2023

You Already Have the Skills You Need to Attend This Workshop

After teaching 750+ students in this workshop, I can say this without a shadow of a doubt– you already have the drawing skills you need to take this workshop.

Even if you have only very beginner level drawing skills, you are ready to take the Mad Art of Caricature workshop.

Every time I run this workshop, I receive several emails asking, “Will I be a total novice in a room full of Rembrandts?”

Every. Single. Workshop.

You might be thinking, “Surely you don’t mean every workshop, Tom! You’re exaggerating!”

But it’s true.

Every!

Single!

Workshop!

Aspiring caricature artists just like you who want to draw their best caricatures yet stop themselves because they think they’ll be the worst artist in the room.

Out of 12 people, there might be 2 or 3 who draw for a living.

The other 9 or 10 students feel EXACTLY like you do right now.

Let’s break it down into actual numbers.

Because I did the math!

Out of 750 students who have taken this workshop, only about 170 were experienced caricaturists.

That means 580+ people felt unsure of their drawing skills and showed up anyway.

And to this day, when I ask for feedback after every workshop, not a single student has said they felt they should have stayed home.

In fact, students say they’re so glad they came and can’t wait to attend a second workshop.

“Tom is able to pick anybody up at his or her very level and will point out ways of improving anybody’s work!”

“Tom’s workshop was tremendously good! His ability to explain matters in the same way he does caricatures – straight on, easy and clear – is absolutely awesome. Whatever level any participant has, Tom is able to pick anybody up at his or her very level and will point out ways of improving anybody’s work!”

Thomas Jahn, Munich 2017

“Tom is a great teacher who can see where to set in no matter what level of expertise you are at.”

“My goal for the workshop was to sharpen my eye, and to see the caricatures we all are drawing. I feel Tom helped me in the right direction with his one on one constructive advice. Tom is a great teacher who can see where to set in no matter what level of expertise you are at. Beginner or seasoned professional you will learn a great deal. As always at these workshops, I get super inspired to draw, draw, draw, now I can’t stop drawing!”

Allan Buch, Munich 2017

“He tries to answer all your questions and adapt his information to cover what you really want to know.”

“Tom Richmond’s workshop was full of valuable information on drawing caricatures. I especially liked his ideas as to how to draw the facial features – the eyes, nose and mouth – and also the face shapes. His tips were really helpful as to what to look for in order to get a better likeness. He tries to answer all your questions and adapt his information to cover what you really want to know. I would highly recommend his workshop for beginners just getting started, or for the professional who has been drawing caricatures for years.”

Jane Yamada, Denver 2019

Introducing…

The only workshop of its kind for all levels of caricature artists, from nervous newbie to seasoned pro.

I’ve taken everything I’ve learned from over 40 years as a professional, award-winning illustrator, literally writing the book on caricature drawing, AND teaching budding live caricature artists in theme parks…

…And packed every technique, strategy, and trick of the trade I possibly can into this workshop.

The Mad Art of Caricature Workshop in Two Words:

Creative Breakthrough!

This workshop is a unique, one-of-a-kind experience designed to rewire your brain to “see” a caricature in all types of faces so you can draw anyone, confidently.

By the end of two days, you won’t just have better drawings — you’ll have:

> A system for building caricatures from the bottom up.

> A newfound confidence to show your work.

> A group of caricature-loving friends who inspire you to keep going long after you leave.

PLUS a bunch of cool swag and stories you’ll tell for years to come.

Here’s how it all breaks down…

Over two days, you’ll gently pull your caricature skills apart and rebuild each part, piece by piece, until you have a well-oiled caricature drawing system.

What’s Included In the Mad Art of Caricature Workshop?

Caricature Theory Made Simple (No Boring Lectures)

  • Learn the “under-caricature” formula so you can easily “see” a caricature in every face.
  • Discover how to break down each facial feature into shapes.
  • Uncover where to start your caricature and what to do even when there’s nothing obvious to exaggerate.
  • Each lesson has a draw-along exercise so it “clicks” as you practice.

Valuable One-on-One Feedback

After each lesson, and draw-along, I’ll walk around the room to see what you’re working on and give friendly, encouraging feedback.

  • Get feedback on your specific drawings, not general lecture advice.
  • Ask questions about your artwork as you go.
  • No bully-criticism, only helpful feedback so you walk away drawing more confidently than ever before!

“The individual critique and advice from him was priceless…”

“Tom’s workshop experience was amazing.  The individual critique and advice from him was priceless, and the feedback he provided others was equally valuable.  Tom has an amazing talent for drawing and also teaching.  Even though the workshop was only a few days long, I saw my work and the work of the other participants improve by following Tom’s advice.  I also liked how he differentiated his instruction for learners of different levels and needs.  We had a guy allergic to pencils for crying out loud! …and Tom found a way to make it work.  This was to me, a once in a lifetime opportunity and I very happy to have experienced it. .”

Ernesto Munoz, Dallas TX 2018

Real-Time Drawing Demonstrations & Draw Alongs

  • See how I draw on the big screen as I discuss each lesson — you’ll see how I develop caricatures in real time and what I’m thinking about as I draw.
  • Discover how to observe facial features so choosing what to exaggerate becomes second nature, even when it’s not obvious at first glance.
  • You’re welcome to ask questions at any time, so nothing is left unclear.
  • Draw along and immediately apply what you’ve learned.
  • Receive personal feedback throughout the two day course
  • Leave with a portfolio of drawings you can show off.

Live Caricature Drawing Techniques

  • On the second day, you’ll step out of your comfort zone with live caricature drawing drills.
  • Learn to observe fast and loosen up — the most important caricature skill of all.
  • Discover it’s okay to be nervous — even I take a few drawings to get back into the swing of it each time I draw live.
  • Draw classmates in 5-minute bursts and keep all the caricatures they draw from the session.
  • Get your own live caricature drawn by me as a keepsake.

This part is scary for most students, so don’t worry if you’re nervous about it.

After teaching well over thousands of students through the years, I’ve determined live drawing to be a critical strategy to help you observe faces quickly, even if the drawing you create isn’t your best work.

Guided Exercises With Curated Reference Book

  • I’ve meticulously curated a reference book packed with faces ranging in age, race, gender, hair type, expression, and more.
  • You’ll get hands-on practice drawing babies, elderly folks with lots of wrinkles, and beautiful faces that seem impossible to exaggerate. You’ll discover how to draw everything from thin to fat, young to old, and various ethnicities and hair types.
  • Learn how to:
    • Exaggerate without insulting your subject.
    • Spot which anatomy you can push vs. what will break the likeness.
    • We’ll work from minimal exaggeration to extreme, so you can decide what you like to draw.

Leave with the tools to draw any person you want, confidently.

Small Class Sizes

  • Only 12 students per workshop — so you’ll never feel lost in a crowd.
  • Because class sizes are small, I’m able to give everyone one-on-one feedback throughout the workshop.
  • Build camaraderie with your classmates. The vibe is supportive, not competitive.

Leave with more confidence to draw your best caricatures yet, better exaggeration skills, and like-minded friends who have the same goal.

“It has been about 8 months since I attended the workshop, and I’m still learning from it.  Everytime I draw, I reflect on the guidance from the workshop and practice applying Tom’s instruction.”

“Like a 5 year old kid who went to DisneyWorld for the first time, I’ve been talking about my workshop experience to anyone who will listen, months after the fact.  I knew that I was going to get a chance to receive instruction, tips, and criticism from Tom, but what I didn’t expect was that I was going to make lifelong friends and acquaintances, who continue to help me along in my caricaturing journey.  It has been about 8 months since I attended the workshop, and I’m still learning from it.  Every time I draw, I reflect on the guidance from the workshop and practice applying Tom’s instruction.  I can’t recommend this workshop enough.”

Nitin Bhojraj, Eagan, MN 2023

“…the tender and sincere way you appreciated and supported each student’s ability.”

“The camaraderie among the participants was also a gift. It felt natural and palpable. I credit that to the tender and sincere way Tom appreciated and supported each student’s individual ability. Infinite THANKS for a profound educational experience.”

-Flash Rosenberg, NYC 2025

“…the swag you go home with is worth the price of admission.”

“Tom is a wealth of artistic knowledge and happy to go over, in detail, any question or issue you might have regarding your drawing ability. I went from an airbrush graphics guy who just couldn’t grasp caricature head shapes and underlayments to someone who could sketch out a face in fundamental caricature with respectability. The people in class are fantastic and I forged many friendships plus the swag you go home with is worth the price of admission. Don’t miss a chance to learn from a legend!”

Kevin Estes, Las Vegas 2020

“This workshop delivers so much value it’s 100% worth it.”

“…it’s not an unreasonable price at all, especially given how much material Tom covers and the personal attention. It’s in a nice space that can’t be cheap to rent out, and the swag, the PDF of the book, the live caricature from Tom, and the poster! I feel like I got a ton for my money. It’s great that Tom acknowledges that it’s expensive, because it is for some people. But he’s delivering so much value it’s 100% worth it.”

-Tim Dose, NYC 2025

“… the workshop was invaluable.”

“At first, I was a bit concerned about the cost of the workshop but my wife emphatically asserted, “Of course you should go! This is the opportunity of a lifetime.” I had to agree with her. In retrospect, the cost is entirely fair and the workshop was invaluable.”

Michael Piaskoski, Toronto 2025

Support Doesn’t End When You Leave the Workshop

Inside, you’ll get:

  • A safe space to share your drawings, post career updates, and ask questions long after the workshop ends.
  • An instant network of like-minded caricature artists from all levels — beginners, hobbyists, working pros, and award-winners — who post their events, career updates, art styles, and more.
  • Ongoing encouragement and inspiration from fellow artists so you never feel like you’re on this journey alone.
  • The custom class poster you received during your workshop (featuring you and your fellow artists) is uploaded by Tom along with all the past workshop posters.

“…there’s no substitute for going through the fundamentals live.”

The setup and pace of the weekend was great. Even though I’ve read Tom’s book, there’s no substitute for going through the fundamentals live. The workshop the right amount of variation in the exercises to keep everything moving. Tom reshaped how I think about crafting these drawings, and got me even more excited to keep working and trying to improve.

– Don Seymour, NYC 2025
