MAD About Giclees!

March 12th, 2021 | Posted in General

I’m starting to offer a few of my prints as high-end giclees, including this never-before-offered print of my “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” MAD cover prop. Up until now I’ve only offered a print of the MAD #9 version of this cover, by that I mean the actual cover of MAD #9 including the 2019 cover date, copy, etc. This new giclee print is how the art appeared onscreen in the actual film, with slight faux vintage edging, the 1961 date, issue number, and pricing. This is also a larger print, with the art being 14″ x 18″ (as opposed to 11″ x 14″) with a white border making it 16″ x 20″ total.

A “giclee” print is a fine art quality print produced on archival paper using lightfast pigment based inks. They are the standard for reproducing photos and artwork. All my giclees are printed on “Smooth Fine Art, Moab Entrada Bright White” 290 gsm, 21.5 mil, archival paper. It’s a bright white, 100% cotton, slightly textured, fine art surface. This is very heavy, substantial paper. I’ll be signing them in the white margin on the bottom right.

Right now I am only offering this new version of the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” cover prop, my Beatles, Ghostbusters, and MAD “Stranger Things” cover prints as giclees. These are not items I stock. I have to special order them from the giclee printer, and they about two weeks to get to me for signing, and then shipping on to the buyer. They’ll be shipping bagged and rolled in a heavy duty tube. So, there is a bit of a wait to get the print. I did a test print of my Beatles illustration, and it’s worth the wait IMO.

There is nothing wrong with my regular prints. They are printed by an offset printer on matte cardstock, and look very nice…but are not giclees. Giclees are fine art prints, meant for framing and lasting almost forever.

So, if you are interested in a higher-end version of these prints check them out in my Studio Store.
