If you grew up in the UK and had a suitably juvenile sense of humor you are probably familiar with the comic magazine Viz. Viz got started in 1979 as a fanzine produced by cartoonist Chis Donald from his bedroom in his parent’s house in Newcastle upon Tyne, and eventually grew to peak at 1.2 million copies sold per issue in the early 1990s, and was the third most popular magazine in the UK. One of the highlights of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival for me was the “MAD Vs. Viz” panel featuring the one and only Sergio Aragonés and myself representing MAD, and the very funny Graham Dury and Simon Thorp from the British humor magazine Viz, moderated by John McShane. John interviews Sergio and Graham Viz is a hilarious publication featuring a compilation of short comics by various creators, fake ads, parodies of tabloids and letters pages, and other features. British actress Barbara Windsor passed away on Thursday. She was beloved by fans in the UK for her roles in the raunchy “Carry On” movie series, the BBC soap opera “Eastenders”, and for being married to notorious gangsters. That’s her on the bottom right of this “Carry On” movie poster spoof I did the art for that appeared in Viz. I’m not sure if I am glad 2019 is over because a lot of good things happened for me professionally in 2019, but a lot of the bad stuff that happened is going to continue to impact things in 2020. The National Cartoonists Society recently announced their first international comic arts festival, NCSFEST, taking place in Huntington Beach, CA in May of 2019. You may say “what… another comic con???”, but you’d be badly mistaken to compare what NCSFEST is going to be and your typical U.S. comic con. This festival is patterned after some of the highly regarded European fests like the UK’s Lakes International Comic Arts Festival and France’s Lyon BD Festival.
