It’s been a while but I did the art for a new piece in the latest issue of the long running U.K. humor comic Viz!, but I have one in a recent issue. The feature is a mashup of the TV show “Mad Men” and the film series “Mad Max”. I love doing these features for Viz, few and far between as they are. They are challenging because the panels are REALLY SMALL, having to cram 15 or so panels per page with room for all the word balloons. Working small really forces me to think about how I am using solid black areas and to… READ MORE

My Latest for Viz!

I did the art for this “commemorative plate” gag in the latest issue of Viz. I had to do it in a real hurry in the middle of a couple of other deadline jobs, so I used a lot of Photoshop tricks to create the image. It’s not really a full painting. I used a few different photo references I got from the web, shot a couple myself, put them together into a composition, ran them through a few filters and then painted over it all creating the parts that needed to be done from scratch. The editors didn’t want it to look cartoony or… READ MORE

The newest issue of Viz (a UK humor publication) has a couple of pieces I did the art for. The one above is a take-off on an old (and apperently beloved by Brits of a certain age) British sitcom called “Steptoe and Son”, which was adapted here in the U.S. as “Sanford and Son”. Same premise, it’s an older father and son running a junk shop/collector business. I watched multiple episodes to get the feel of the show and the characters… it was damn funny, but pretty dated as you can imagine. The show ran from ’62-’65 and had a revival in the 70’s. The… READ MORE

I did this for UK humor mag Viz as part of a gag ad for a collector’s plate commemorating Prince Andrew’s 60th birthday. You’ll have to do a search for “Price Andrew Pizza Express” to get the story. Here’s the actual page from Viz #294: I may use “Poland Piano” as a pseudonym from now on, although that is a poor picture of me. BTW the guys at Viz are damn funny. READ MORE

I did the art for another little comic gag story in Viz #292 this month, on sale in the UK and via subscription elsewhere. I am enjoying these short stories and the small panel format. It’s a big departure from the larger MAD panels that are stuffed with dialogue and visual detail. The smaller format forces me to simplify the imagery/panel design in order to tell the story. The editors/production folks add the word balloons after I do the art, BTW… READ MORE

Viz #290 is out and they have once again stooped low enough to have a couple of pieces by me in the issue. One is the color movie poster above. Now, if you don’t know what the “Carry On” movie series is then… join the club. I’d never heard of them but as I didn’t grow up in England why would I have? It’s a series of comedic films all starring virtually the same players that spanned 31 movies from 1958 to 1992 (although 30 of the 31 movies were released between 1958 and 1978, with 1992’s “Carry On Columbus” being a try at reviving… READ MORE

I’ve got another piece in the newest issue of Viz Comic (#289), which just came out in the UK. Here’s a few of the panels from the two page feature: Please don’t ask why Bruce Willis and Demi Moore are back to being married, or why they are suddenly British and living in the Manchester area of England in a dumpy apartment flat. I don’t know, but it’s damn funny. Whaddya mean you want to read the whole story? What do you think this is, a furshlugginer bloody library? Go out and buy a copy, or better yet get a subscription, ya clod wanker! READ MORE
