MAD About Al Jaffee!
MAD #14 is starting to appear in subscriber’s mailboxes, and it’s a special “Al Jaffee” issue celebrating his retirement at the tender age of 99. The issue is full of reprints of some of Al’s work, “tribute” pieces of some of Al’s classic features like “Snappy Answers…”, “MAD Solutions to…” done by current Usual Idiots, and a new fold-in by Al that he did years ago to run as his last when he retired. I did the above spot for the last page of the issue. I also did the art on a Desmond Devlin penned tribute piece.
Michael Cavna‘s “Comic Riffs” feature in the Washington Post ran an article on Al’s retirement yesterday. A good read.
Al is a national treasure. It’s a shame he had to retire after only about 78 years of working professionally… I think he was just starting to get the hang of it.

At least I was able to wrap up my MAD career writing three different pieces in the style of, and as a tribute to, my #1 MAD hero Al Jaffee. That’s a small comfort. Which will get smaller and smaller every time I have to buy groceries!
It was fantastic work as always, Des.
Oh and Tom, too I guess 🙄
