Sketch o’the Week- Quentin Tarantino!

October 17th, 2018 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

This week’s SotW subject is one of my all-time favorite directors, Quentin Tarantino. I remember being blown away by “Pulp Fiction” when I first saw it in a theater in St. Louis with a bunch of my Six Flags caricature crew in 1994. I had never seen a movie like that before. I’ve never missed seeing any of his films, and they never disappoint. BTW as usual the original is for sale in the Studio Store. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Working in Other Styles?

January 30th, 2022 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: For your most recent MAD cover (issue #23), did MAD tell you to draw in your older style? I noticed that it resembles a lot of your early MAD work. The line width, colors, and shading kind of resemble your earlier MAD work, I’ve noticed that’s the style in many of your older assignments. A: Here’s the cover in question: No, MAD didn’t ask me to work in anything other than my usual style. Actually I am not quite sure what you are seeing in this that seems like an “older” version of my work. To me my earlier MAD stuff looked stiff and… READ MORE

Lousy Law Rides Again!

September 17th, 2021 | Posted in General

Some months ago Quentin Tarantino released a novelized version of his film “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”, and it was just announced that there is a deluxe hardcover version coming out in November that will include a bunch of extra goodies… including the second parody Andrew Secunda and I did of the fictional “Bounty Law” TV show for a mini-MAD that was exclusive to the “Collector’s Edition Ultra HD Blu-Ray” of the film. That mini-MAD was pretty hard to come by, but I would think this hardcover book will be easy to get. If you didn’t get the Blu-Ray exclusive one, here’s your chance… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Celebrity Commissions?

June 13th, 2021 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Did Quentin Tarantino request a sketch of himself after you illustrated 2 covers for his film “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”? Who are some well known celebrities who have commissioned you?  A: No, Quentin didn’t ask me to draw him after I did those prop covers… I just did it for fun for my “Sketch o’the Week”. I haven’t had all that many celebrities commission me to do art for them. It’s much more frequent to have celebrities, particularly writers, producers, and directors, contact me about the art I did of their show or movie in MAD. However I have had a few… READ MORE

“Bounty Law” MAD Movie Prop Giclee

March 12th, 2021 | Posted in

Fine art quality, large-sized giclee print of the “Bounty Law” MAD cover prop created for the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, and shown prominently in the movie. This is NOT a print of the Oct 2019 MAD #9 cover but a reproduction of the actual movie prop as it was seen on screen in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, complete with faux vintage edging, the 1961 cover date, issue number, and pricing. The cover features Leonardo DiCaprio in a vintage Jack Davis homage style meant to look like an early 60’s MAD cover. This is not a homemade inkjet print… READ MORE

Honored to be Honored

I had a nice surprise is the mail yesterday. My plaque for winning the National Cartoonists Society Divisional award, aka the “Silver Reuben” for “Best in Magazine/Newspaper Illustration” for 2019 arrived on my doorstep, and was not stolen by porch pirates. Yes, this is 2021 and this was for 2019, but the mail is slow during a pandemic! Actually as there was no in-person NCS Reuben Award Weekend this year, the awards and speaking program were done virtually back in September as part of NCSFest, so it hasn’t been all that long since the awards were announced (BTW if you want to see any of… READ MORE
