CLAPTRAP Backers Have Spoken!

January 5th, 2021 | Posted in News

One of the best things about being a backer of Desmond Devlin and my upcoming book of MAD-style movie parodies was that those at a certain perk level and above got to nominate and vote to chose three of the twelve movies we will be spoofing in CLAPTRAP.

Well, the votes have been counted and the winners announced today!

Joining the previously announced eight films to be ridiculed by Des and I will be:

  • The Blues Brothers
  • The Princess Bride
  • Citizen Kane

Those are some stellar choices! Well done, backers! Remember in order to by considered nominated movies had to be major release films that were never spoofed in MAD. Looking over the full list it’s hard to believe none of these movies got the MAD treatment. I guess they were too busy spoofing immortal films like “Bunny Lake is Missing”, “Gotcha!”, and “Hot Dog- The Movie”.

That makes 11 out of the 12 movie parodies now set:

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • The Shawshank Redemption
  • Psycho
  • Goodfellas
  • The Big Lebowski
  • Toy Story 4
  • Unforgiven
  • Blade Runner
  • The Blues Brothers
  • The Princess Bride
  • Citizen Kane

That leaves one still to be decided. Des and I will be picking that one and we’ll announce it down the road a piece. We are already discussing it, and the arguing has commenced. Des wants us to have a head-to-head spelling bee to decide who gets to choose. I want to arm wrestle for it. One way or another we’ll have that last one chosen and announced sometime soon.

Don’t forget to keep spreading the word! Anyone can preorder a copy of CLAPTRAP via our Indiegogo Indemand page. Keep sharing the link, and look for more sneak peeks from the book soon!

  1. Ken says:

With Super Hero movies being all the rage of late, it would be a shame if you weren’t to chose one.

    • Tom Richmond says:

It seems like all MAD has done in the last 10 years has been superhero movies. I used to joke that if a movie didn’t have capes, wands or spaceships in it MAD was not going to do a spoof. Personally I’d like to do other things. But, Des and I are still hashing that out.

  2. John Mccann says:

MAD has never spoofed a Beatle movie. Only a back cover of Ringo by Frazetta. Maybe all 5 of their movies in one as a musical.

  3. Brooks Blake says:

There are war movies you could do like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, or Platoon. Outside of American Sniper, MAD didn’t do any war movies in recent years. Or you could do a foreign language film.

  4. Jed says:

I hope this is CLAPTRAP 1 …. and CLAPTRAP 2 is not too far off … !!!

  5. Andreeas Ulanowsky says:

I’d love to see an Epic film like Spartacus be dome. Other that Gladiator, I don’t think an epic film from the 1950’s has ever been parodied in Mad Magazine. Perhaps a spoof of the poster from a classic film from the 1960’s could be done as a compromise. In the end, though, it’ll be up to you and Des to decide. I’m sure it’ll be a well known film, too. My personal choice? Walt Disney’s best film: Mary Poppins!
