I received a nice e-mail the other day from the administrator of Gillian Anderson‘s Official Web Site (Scully of The X-Files, Lady Dedlock in Bleak House) wanting to extend Gillian’s invitation for me to contribute a doodle/drawing for NF, Inc’s Third National Doodle Day Auction scheduled to start on May 7, 2009. Art by Sean Parks The 63rd Annual National Cartoonist Society’s Reuben Awards weekend is shaping up for this spring. The event will be held in Los Angeles on May 22nd-24th at the Renaissaince Hollywood Hotel. Guest speakers include “In The Bleachers” cartoonist Steve Moore, animator Eric Goldberg, movie poster illustrator Drew Struzan and Pulitzer prize winning editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez. Tune in and see! Way back in October last year I sat dutifully by the telephone waiting to get a call from Meredith Vieira just in case my longtime friend and fellow caricaturist/cartoonist Jim Batts needed me as a phone a friend when he was on “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?“. Jim appeared on the movie trivia themed week of the show. Asking me to answer a movie trivia question that stumps Jim is a little like asking a 5th grader to solve a physics problem that Stephen Hawking couldn’t handle. Al Feldstein served as the editor of MAD Magazine for almost 30 years, having taken over after Harvey Kurtzman left due to differences with Bill Gaines. Kurtzman took most of MAD‘s artists with him to do a humor magazine called “Trump!” for Hugh Hefner, leaving Feldstein with the unenviable task of rebuilding MAD almost from scratch. The rest, as they say, is history. Feldstein retired from MAD in 1984. Recently Al’s health has taken a wrong turn. On February 24th he was hospitalized for some tests after blacking out while at home on his ranch. Turns out he has heart problems that require bypass open… READ MORE

Last weekend my local chapter of the National Cartoonist Society (if you can call a chapter that encompasses Minnesota, Iowa, the Dakotas, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado “local”) met in Lincoln, NE to judge our assigned division of the NCS Reuben awards, have a chapter meeting and listen to several terrific speakers in the bargain. Some fermented beverages were also consumed. NCC Members deep in contemplation of the entries. First up was the judging of the divisional award for “Editorial Cartooning”. On my way to San Francisco today, but at least I’ll have something to read on the way! Issue # 3 of the excellent “Stay Tooned!” magazine appeared in my mailbox on Wednesday. This issue features profiles of two of the members of my local NCS Chapter, the “North Central”: editorial cartoonist Paul Fell and illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt. Also featured are profiles on Chad Carpenter, Benita Epstein, R.J. Matson, Jim Scancarelli, Richard Thompson and Mike Witmer.
