As I mentioned before, I have suddenly found myself attending WonderCon in San Francisco beginning tomorrow and running through Sunday evening. This happened very much at the last minute… in more ways than one. Before I begin to go into the gory details, here is my official schedule of appearances at WonderCon: Fri. The International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA, formerly known as the NCN) just announced their guest speaker(s) for the 2009 Annual Caricature Convention and Competition on November 2nd-7th in Sandusky, Ohio: It’s an all MAD lineup featuring: Sam Viviano– Longtime MAD artist and current art director Mark Fredrickson– Frequent MAD cover artist, former airbrush demigod and current digital painting master Hermann Mejia– The brilliant “artist’s artist” for MAD, caricaturist, painter, sculptor, genius Tom Richmond– An unworthy schlub along for the ride That’s quite a lineup, and as far as I know very unique. I just made plans to attend WonderCon in San Francisco from Feb. 27th through March 1st. I’ll be have several scheduled appearances at the “Super Capers” movie booth where I will be signing copies of the film’s promotional comic book as well as possibly at the DC Comics exhibit. I will have a bunch of original art for sale from MAD and I might be drawing some live caricatures as well. MSNBC reports about a criminal case in Pennsylvania involving two judges who allegedly accepted over 2.6 million dollars in kickbacks for sentencing minors to dentention/correctional facilities, including a girl who’s crime was creating a parody of her vice principal. If drawing caricatures of your high school’s authority figures was punishable by jailtime, I’d be in permanent solitary confinement right next to Hannibal Lecter in some dungeon somewhere. Yes, it’s that day again… the national holiday that isn’t officially recognized (yet) but one we all look forward to the other 364 days of the year. Yes, its National Gorilla Suit Day. What is National Gorilla Suit Day??? Are you joking?!? It began, as almost all nonsensical and idiotic things do, with Don Martin. A series of cartoons in the 1964 book Don Martin Bounces Back! concerns the misadventures of Fester Bestertester and his railings against various gorilla suit companies and the holiday National Gorilla Suit Day. Yesterdays’ deadline for submissions for the NCS divisional Reuben awards has left my studio overflowing with nearly three dozen submissions for the “Editorial Cartoon” category which my North Central Chapter is judging. We’ll be meeting in Lincoln, NE next month to judge the entries. That reminds me of somehting I have been meaning to tell folks about. The rumors of MAD‘s demise after issue #500 were greatly exaggerated… but not that greatly. Newsarama reports today that DC has announced MAD will become a quarterly publication following issue #500, which will be on the stands in April. Issue 501 will be released in August, with issue 502 in November and so on. The magazine will go from 48 pages to 56. More on Publisher’s Beat. DC also announced that both MAD Kids and MAD Classics will be discontinued. Three full time MAD staffers are also being laid off, along with a number of other DC staff members. Artwork by Michael Ramirez, Pulitzer prize winning editorial cartoonist One last reminder about the February 6th deadline for the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. The National Cartoonists Society Foundation has a new website with news and information about both the scholarships and other NCSF programs. This from the NCF: The annual Jay Kennedy Scholarship, in memory of the late King Features editor, was funded by an initial $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation/King Features Syndicate and additional generous donations from Jerry Scott, Jim Borgman, Patrick McDonnell and many other prominent cartoonists.
