I did the above doodle for Gillian Anderson‘s cause fighting neurofibromatosis some weeks ago, as part of National Doodle Day. National Doodle Day is an annual event where dozens of doodles are auctioned off to raise funds to benefit NF, Inc., an organization dedicated to providing support to individuals and families affected by neurofibromatosis (NF). Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that affects one in every 2,500 births. NF is more common than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy and Huntington’s Disease combined. Funds raised from the Doodle Day auction will go to support education, advocacy, coalitions, and research for treatments and a cure. The auction is on!… READ MORE

To be more accurate: I remember seeing this exact sign on a wire rotating rack at the Ben Franklin “five and dime” store when I was a really little kid. My dad would buy me Batman, Superman or Captain Marvel comics and I’d take them home, read them over and over, copy all the drawings and then draw my own adventures with kid versions of the characters. Great fun. Today is “Free Comic Book Day“, and I’ll be bringing my own son with me to the local comic shop to see what’s out there that’s cool and interesting. This past weekend I drove down to picturesque Lake Okoboji, IA to attend the 2009 Toon Awards Exhibition, held at the Pearson Lakes Art Center right in Okoboji (in the town, not in the lake). It was organized by Toon-Ed, a cartoon education group led by Sioux Falls cartoonist Ken Alvine. Veteran magazine gag cartoonist and Iowa resident Dave Carpenter and Ken did a fantastic job with the show, program and all the arrangements. Promo art by Peter “PG” Gustafsson “The MAD Generation” is an exhibition of MAD inspired artwork showing at The Gallery at East Atlanta Tattoo in Atlanta, GA. It only runs for two weeks and the final three days are today, tomorrow and Saturday. The artwork in the show are tributes to MAD and the visual images that made it successful as seen through the eyes of about 50 different artists. This looks like a fun show and I wish it was nearby. I was once again privileged to be a part of the selection of the annual Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship recipient this year. The National Cartoonist Society Foundation just announced the 2009 winner: _______________________________________________ 2009 Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Winner The National Cartoonists Society Foundation (NCSF) is happy to announce the winner of the 2009 Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. It was recently announced by the International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA) convention organizers that, for the first time ever, non-ISCA members are able to attend the main speaker presentations and panels for only $99.00 (cheap!). So come to beautiful… uh…. downtown Sandusky Ohio this November to listen to a bunch of MAD artists make fools of themselves.
