Don “Duck” Edwing, 1934-2016

2016 took yet another longtime member of the “Usual Gang of Idiots” with the passing of Don “Duck” Edwing on Dec 26th at the age of 84. If I was required to name the most unsung hero in the history of MAD, it might be Duck. Not only did he have official bylines in over 250 issue of the magazine since 1961, he was also an uncredited writer for many later Don Martin and Spy vs. Spy cartoons and other features, as well as contributing cover ideas and “punching up” other scripts and articles. Sudden Open Space in Orlando Workshop!

That empty space is filled. Thanks to all and we’ll see you next month! I just had one of my students for my Orlando workshop next month withdraw from the class, so I suddenly have an opening! First come, first served. I reduced the tuition from $600 to $500 for the workshop recently as I decided $600 is too much to expect people to pay, even though I did sell out Orlando at that price. Paul Peter Porges 1927-2016

Image courtesy MAD Magazine MAD lost another longtime member of the Usual Gang of Idiots this past week with the passing of Paul Peter Porges at age 89. Porges led a very interesting life. Born in Vienna in 1927, he fled the Nazis as a child via France before being captured and placed in a deportment camp. He escaped by hiding in a garbage collection and was smuggled into Switzerland, where he studied art and met his future wife, Lucie. After the war he emigrated to the United States along with his parents, who themselves had survived a Nazi concentration camp. While serving in the… READ MORE

Las Vegas Workshop Back On: Feb 7-9th!

Great news, my Las Vegas workshop is back on for Feb 7th-8th and 9th, 2017! It will take place at High Class Studios, 5240 West Charleston Blvd in Las Vegas. This is a brand new teaching/studio facility owned by Jason Neistadt, and we will be one of the first if not THE first event on the remodeled property. It will be a great space for the workshop. The downside for anyone coming in from out of town is that this is not a hotel, so out-of-towners will need to find a hotel on their own.
