No Las Vegas Workshop For Now…

December 20th, 2016 | Posted in News

Sorry to say my meeting space booking for the Las Vegas Workshop in February suddenly fell through, and I will not be able to do it on those dates because all of my alternate spaces are also booked up. So, I am going to have to rethink the dates and replan the entire thing. This is the second time a hotel has dropped the ball on me… my London workshop had to switch to a different hotel at the last second also. Very frustrating. I will announce when the new dates are set. 🙁 READ MORE

Monday MADness: Honoring Angelo!

December 19th, 2016 | Posted in Monday MADness

I was extremely remiss in not posting about this right after it happened. The National Cartoonists Society honored wonderful, longtime member of MAD‘s “Usual Gang of Idiots” Angelo Torres with the prestigious Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award on October 24th in a ceremony in New York City. The Caniff is a big deal, and Angelo greatly deserve the recognition for a long and fantastic career both inside and outside the pages of MAD. Unfortunately I could not be there, as I was in Orlando on our annual family trip to visit The Mouse and other friends at the time. Several of Angelo’s admirers sent… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Drawing Subject Young and Old?

December 18th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Have you ever had to draw someone who has been in showbiz for most of their adult life, and had to draw a young version of them, and an older version of them (think Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Mike Patton, etc)? Can you essentially pull it off by the drawing same face with a few extra wrinkles, or does a person’s facial structure change in a more nuanced way? (Jowls, bigger noses, etc.) A: Yes, I have had to draw different aged version of subjects many times. The first example that comes to mind for me is probably Ed O’Neil and Christina Applegate, both whole… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Noah Schnapp!

December 14th, 2016 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I’m back in the studio after close to three weeks abroad! This week’s Sketch o’the Week features Noah Schnapp as Will Byers from “Stranger Things”. as always, the original is available in the Studio Store. This is going to be my last “Stranger Things” sketch I think. I got all the kids done and that was my main objective, and it’s time to move on to something else… I’m thinking “Westworld”. READ MORE

MAD About India!

December 13th, 2016 | Posted in General

When this post goes up The Lovely Anna and I should be somewhere in the air on our 22 hour travel marathon back to Minnesota after a wonderful stay in New Delhi, India. We get back later today and then we’ll see how long it takes to recover from the jet lag. Our time in India was a lot of fun. Many thanks to the folks from Comic Con India who invited me to be a guest at the Delhi Comic Con. Having been to many cons in the U.S. I would say the one I experienced in Delhi has a similar vibe… crowded with… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Reference for SotW?

December 11th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Have you ever considered posting the reference pictures you use for your Sketch of the Week caricatures? Often I know of  the folks you are sketching, but I learn more when I see why you chose to push here or pull there based on the reference picture(s) used. Just a thought. A: Some people have asked if I would do that. I suppose I could, but I often don’t base the caricature on a single photo, and the SotW isn’t really meant as a teaching tool. It’s just a sketch I do for fun and sometimes put in the store for sale. Posting the… READ MORE
