Sunday Mailbag: Reference for Poses?

December 3rd, 2017 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I marvel at your ability to draw likenesses and your command of fundamental anatomy. But how facile are you at depicting more unusual human positions? If your assignment were to draw someone doing a backwards somersault into a pool, are you able to conjure up the image out of your head…or do you seek out references, either via online photos or taking your own photos a la Norman Rockwell? What do you do to depict the human body in more contorted poses…or, for that matter, even “standard” ones — bending over to tie one’s shoelaces, etc. A: I usually take a crack at any… READ MORE

MAD #549 Sneak Peek

December 1st, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

The Huffington Post released an exclusive sneak peek at MAD #549 yesterday, including a look at one of the two pieces I did for the issue (see above). This is the annual “20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things” of the year issue. I did one other “20 Dumbest” piece as well, I’ll post a peek at that once the issue hits the stands Dec12th. By the way, that HuffPo exclusive also showed the cover of MAD #549 (art by Mark Fredrickson). Click the link above to check that out! Incidentally this is the second to last issue for the NYC staff. I’m currently wrapping up… READ MORE

I’ve just booked one of my three day caricature workshops in the New York City area, specifically Long Island City, May 4th-6th! The Slow Demise of Original Comic Art

November 28th, 2017 | Posted in General

The National Cartoonists Society Foundation‘s Thanks&Giving art auction to benefit hurricane relief efforts is down to its final two days. If you have not at least visited Heritage Auction‘s auction NCSF auction pages, do yourself a favor and go take a look. Bid if you can or wish, but enjoy looking at the images. There are some amazing pieces in there. Looking at them myself I’m reminded how rare these sorts of pieces of original art are starting to become. A few weeks ago I was at a cartooning get together and I overheard an artist I admire telling another how he now does 100%… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Hesitant to Ink?

November 26th, 2017 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Do you still ever hesitate when you start inking a freshly penciled piece? Or is it old hat by now? A: I would not say I hesitate to ink anything, but I’m never thrilled to do it because it’s an exercise in controlled chaos for me. However I am long over the “my inks suck all the life out of my pencils” phase. That only happens when you try to slavishly reproduce every nuance of a pencil drawing with ink. I am not a great inker. In the 18 years I have been doing inked illustrations, and to be honest I didn’t do a… READ MORE
