Sunday Mailbag: Happy Accidents?

December 10th, 2017 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: How much of your drawings are not planned? I mean, are there parts where you are thinking: “Hey, I didn’t plan to draw this line/look/composition like that, but it looks good. I’ll keep that!” A: That’s what Bob Ross used to call “happy accidents”. When you get right down to it, all drawing is like that. As an artist I have an idea of what I want my drawing to look like, and then I spend time pursuing that mental image. Sometimes it appears instantly, sometime I have to chase it down. That mental image is seldom a fully finished drawing in your mind,… READ MORE

I guess I should have held off with the Deadline Demon this morning. Here they are! The book will be released next month. Check out the Sitcomics page for more details. READ MORE

The Dreaded Deadline Demon

December 8th, 2017 | Posted in General

It’s been a while since the Demon has reared his ugly head… not because I’ve not had deadlines but because I’ve actually been home for a solid month 7 straight weeks (almost) and been able to keep up with things. Not so right now, As I am headed out for a week starting Saturday and need to finish a big job before I hit the road. See you on the other side! READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday: The Coneheads!

December 7th, 2017 | Posted in Illustration Throwback Thursday

I recently acquired copies of this four issue miniseries I did the pencils on for Marvel back in 1994… got them for a whopping 75 cents each (I over paid, I think). Can’t imagine where I lost my copies along the way. I wrote a blog post about the job some time back, but here is a look at the four covers and a few scans of some interior pages. Written by Terry Collins, inks by Marie Severin (except the cover of issue #1 shown above, inks by Jimmy Palmiotti), lettering by Dave Sharpe and colors by John Kalisz. READ MORE

A Worthy Kickstarter

December 5th, 2017 | Posted in News

As a rule I do not promote crowd sourcing projects just because 1) there are way too many of them 2) if I promote one I get inundated with requests to promote others, and that’s not what this blog is about. I stopped promoting Kickstarters about 5 years ago. That said, I’m breaking my own rule and promoting a Kickstarter project from my pal and fellow Minnesota cartoonist/illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt. It’s for a book called “Mostly Nonsense”, and is a collection of gag cartoons he has done via his web comic site Sketchbook Silliness. The book contains over 100 cartoons ranging from clever to silly… READ MORE

Order Your Studio Store Gifts ASAP!

December 5th, 2017 | Posted in News

Just a FYI to all those who are thinking about ordering one of my limited edition prints, signed books, sketches or original art as a gift for someone this holiday season: I’ll be out of town from Dec 9-16th and unable to ship anything out during that time. Anything ordered before Dec 9th will be shipped out prior to my leaving, and anything on or after Dec 9th won’t go out until Mon Dec 18th. That’s cutting it close with the USPS’s usual holiday shipping chaos. So, if you want something from the Studio Store, I’d get the order in by Friday.   READ MORE

Monday MADness: The OD!

December 4th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Anyone remember the mid 2000’s FOX prime time soap opera about privileged and whiny teenagers from southern California called “The O.C.”? Me neither. But MAD did a parody of it in #442, June 2004. It was written by Dennis Snee with art by me. The pencil roughs from the splash are lost to posterity, but here’s look at the finished art and the inks from the splash page and the pencil roughs and finshes of the rest of the parody. Just for fun I drew two (at the time) teenagers I knew who were actually FROM Orange County, Joe and Luke McGarry. They are the… READ MORE
