Illustration Throwback Thursday (uh… Friday) #42

January 5th, 2018 | Posted in Illustration Throwback Thursday

Here’s a look at a cover illustration and some spots I did back in January 2011 for Honolulu Magazine for their annual “Worst Things of the Year” issue called the Sour Poi Awards. Both finals and pencils:

  1. BAnt says:

Hi! It’s incredible how your sketches became final artworks. You are very skilled both on drawing and coloring! Do you use some kind of software filter in order to obtain the “noisy” effect in the sands and in the road (third drawing)? Cheers

    • Tom Richmond says:

I use the simple PhotoShop “Noise” filter for that. It’s quick and dirty, but does the job. Now a days I usually use the blur filter so the grainy effect is less harsh. I don’t use many filters when I color my work, but that one I do for concrete, sand and maybe brick or dirt effects.

  2. BAnt says:

Interesting. I use the noise filter for the beard as well.
    Thank you.
