Probably one of my favorite pieces I’ve seen of yours. Wow.

  5. Mike Slaubaugh says:

Finally your first cover for a regular issue of MAD! Linh awaited and wort the wait!

  6. Mike Slaubaugh says:

Oops, accidentally hit send before finishing and editing that earlier post which should have said “Congrats on your second cover for a regular issue of MAD after patiently waiting 9 issues after your first cover (it was worth the wait). Hope it won’t be another year and a half until your third cover!”

  7. gregory Smith says:

Get ready for some photos featuring the cast of the show read this and some older mads that will probably be published online 2 weeks later and be published in mad issue #550

Definitely a favorite of mine. I’m not really unbiased though. It has all the best elements of a MAD cover: story, hilarity, Alfred E done in excellent artistic fashion. Sorry, tried to sound like I put some thought into it.

    It’s really good Tom.

  9. Bill Karis says:

Congrats…still CAN’T believe this is only your second cover for MAD!

  10. It’s awesome!! Congratulations!

  11. Billy says:

    Two questions, Tom :

    1. HOW have you only done 2 covers in all the years you’ve been working for MAD? It’s crazy! Your style is so much like many of our favorite old school MAD artists(Drucker, Torres) that it boggles my mind they haven’t asked sooner. What a great cover!

    2. Where is your signature on the cover? Was it the darn UPC again?

    • Tom Richmond says:

      1. MAD has traditionally had cover artists be separate from the ones that do work in the interior of the magazine. Of the 548 issues published a whopping 293 of those covers were done by only 4 artists, Mark Fredrickson, Norman Mingo, Richard Williams and Frank Kelly Freas. None of those artists do or did more than the occasional special painted piece for the magazine contents. MAD would occasionally have one of their “regulars’ do a cover, but other than Mort Drucker and Jack Rickard, who did 42 and 33 covers respectively, most have only done a handfull.

      2. I seldom sign my art. It always feels like I am shoehorning it in somewhere and it detracts from the image. The byline is enough for me.
