MADness #33- Spider-Man 2!

We continue our relentless crawl through my work at MAD Magazine with yet another Spider-Man movie parody… this time it’s “Spider-Man 2” again written by Dick DeBartolo and first appearing in MAD #446, October 2004. This particular parody is rare in that for some reason I scanned in ALL the final pencils and saved those files. Since I have no “roughs” from this job, I have to assume I skipped that step and went right to the final pencils to show MAD for approval. I don’t remember why, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I’ll post the full pencils after the regular pages.

The one thing I remember about this particular job was trying to sneak a gag past the MAD editors on this splash page. Now that I look back on it, I don’t think this was a gag that they would have had a problem with, so I am not sure why I felt I was being sneaky in getting it past them. The gag is where the webbing is coming out of Spidey:

Not all that subversive. Regardless they didn’t say anything to it was part of the splash. Here are the story pages:

Here are the pencils. When I say “final pencils” what I mean is drawn at original art size (200% of print size) on the boards that I will ink on. These pages are big… about 16.5″ x 21.5″, with the splash two pages taped together. After approvals I would ink directly on these boards over the pencils, then erase the pencil lines when done inking:

Stay tooned next week for another heart-racing episode featuring a TV show parody written by a MAD editor!

As a Comic Book collector and lover of your work, I loved what you did with this parody. When I was a kid Marvel came out with the Not Brand Ecch! comic which parodied many of theirs and DC’s heros and villains…. You would have fit right in with the stories and artists working on those… in fact… they would have been the wiser taking lessons from you good buddy.
