If you draw caricatures for a living, the annual convention and competition of the International Society of Caricature Artists is as close to utopia as you are likely to find…. and I’m not just saying that because I used to be president of the organization. It really is an amazing event. When DC Comics became DC Entertainment months ago there was a lot of speculation that they might move all their operations, including the publishing division that produces DC Comics, graphic novels and MAD Magazine, to the west coast. Every three years Ohio State University and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum puts on the Festival of Cartoon Art, a weekend of presentations, lectures and panels on the art of cartoonist both past and present. The festival is self-described as “a unique celebration of cartoons and comics featuring exhibitions, presentations by top creators, panel discussions, an academic pre-conference, and other special programs.” This is a big deal in the cartooning community and something I am very much looking forward to attending for the first time when it takes place in Columbus, OH, October 14-17. Remember that debacle back in November when Apple rejected the U.S. Congress app featuring caricatures I had drawn based on it being “defamatory to public figures”? Surprising public backlash got Apple to reconsider, and Apple kept making the same mistake with apps from Daryl Cagle, Mark Fiore and others. Well, it looks like Apple finally decided to get more specific about the rules and how they apply to satire and humor. Last summer I traveled to Cali, Colombia to be a guest speaker at the Sal??n Internacional de Historietas y Caricaturas Calicomix, their annual cartoon, comics and caricature festival. You can read all about that experience, if you are so inclined, here, here and here. I also took a trip earlier this year to Cuba as part of a cultural exchange between cartoonists. Therefore, I can speak with some experience about the cartoon work being done in Central and South America. Comics and cartoons are there, especially humor comics. I think John Read needs to get a hobby. You’d think he’d have enough to do writing, editing and producing the excellent cartooning industry magazine Stay Tooned!, but apparently he has a lot of time on his hands. Instead of doing puzzles or collecting rozzers or veeblefetzers he’s put together a traveling exhibit of original cartoon strip artwork called “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” which features 140 comic strip and panel originals… all published in American newspapers on the same Sunday, April the 11th.
