Another group of cartoonists are off soon (at an indisposed date and time… I’d tell you specifics but they are above your pay grade) to the middle east to draw for U.S. soldiers deployed “down range” i.e. in the war zone. This group includes Jeff Keane (The Family Circus), Rick Kirkman (Baby Blues) Mike Luckovich (Pulitzer prize winning editorial cartoonist), Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine), Garry Trudeau (Doonesbury) and myself.. clearly they have me along to make the coffee. We’ll have a stop in Landstuhl, Germany to draw at the Regional Medical Center and the Ramstein AFB there before heading on to a new area… READ MORE

I never met Jess Rubio, but as a live caricaturist and the owner of several theme park caricature operations I sure heard about him. Rubio was the “face” of caricatures and art concessions at the Walt Disney theme parks. He started as a fill in portrait artist in 1957 at Disneyland, and a chance meeting with Walt Disney when Rubio came in early to set up his location started him on a road that led to his being the exclusive art concession operator in all the Disney theme parks in California and Florida. I recently got an e-mail from the film’s creator Gary VandenBerg telling me about a donation site they have put up in order to try and raise funds to finish the film and get it out to the public. Today is “opening day” for the movie “I Want Your Money“, a conservative film by filmmaker Ray Griggs for which I did a bunch of artwork including the caricature of Obama for the above movie poster, character designs for the animated sequences as well as storyboard for those segments. This movie is getting quite a bit of press. The Lovely Anna called me this morning (I’m in Ohio for the OSU Festival of Cartoon Art”) to say there was a feature about the film on the Today Show this morning that was mostly clips of the animation using my character designs. I’m currently in Columbus, OH for the Festival of Cartoon Art, a once-every-three-years celebration of the art of cartooning held at Ohio State University and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library. This past weekend I attended the annual meeting of my chapter of the National Cartoonists Society AKA the North Central Chapter In Omaha, Nebraska. We were treated to beautiful fall weather, great speakers and events and great company. The speakers, meeting and events all took place in the Old Market area of downtown Omaha, a charming series of bricked streets brimming with local restaurants, pubs, shops and galleries.
