18 hours after landing back home from my USO trip, I left again for Charlotte, NC, where I will be drawing caricatures for CNN through Friday at the Democratic National Convention. I have no idea if I will end up on TV or not, but I am bound to be drawing a lot of recognizable folks from politics, media and other forms of celebrity. I will try and post pictures if and when I get a chance to do so. It’s been a long time since I was on one of these trips (the last one was to Kandahar, Afghanistan), but I am currently off with a group of National Cartoonist Society cartoonists to an undisclosed location in southwest Asia to draw for the troops deployed “down range” in the middle east. I’d tell you specifics but they are above your pay grade. This group includes Jeff Bacon (Broadside), Dave Coverly (Speed Bump), Jeff Keane (The Family Circus), Rick Kirkman (Baby Blues), Sam Viviano (MAD Magazine) and myself. I get a number of inquiries every week from people looking to get me to do a personal caricature of them (or their mom, or husband, or dog, or whatever). Some are from genuine fans who think that would be cool, some are from collectors, some offer to pay me, some don’t. Regardless, I regretfully have to turn them all down because I just can’t find the time to do private commissions . . . I can barely find the time to get all my commercial work done. I usually don’t post on Saturdays but this news is too sad not to comment on. Universal Uclick announced Friday That Richard Thompson‘s brilliant comic strip Cul de Sac would be ending next month: On September 9, 2007, the remarkable talent of Richard Thompson hit the newspaper pages in the comic strip Cul de Sac. The buzz began even before the strip debuted; Bill Watterson emerged from his retirement to praise the strip’s writing, artwork and imagination. MAD continues it’s “MAD’s Greatest Artists” book series with the incomparable Mort Drucker. This hardcover beauty will be available Oct. 23rd, and can be preordered now on Amazon. I got a chance to see a mock-up bound copy of this book when I visited the MAD offices back in June. Obviously it’s not a “complete” collection of Mort’s MAD work . . . having been in over 400 issues that would need many volumes. We lost one of the greats of the comic book world this morning. Joe Kubert, a true legend of comic art, passed way today at age 85. I only met Joe briefly once, when he was a guest speaker and recipient of the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Weekend in New Jersey in 2010 (I did the above caricature of him for the NCS T-shirt on that occasion). He was one of the most well-liked and well-respected artists in the business, and I never heard anyone say anything about him except that he deserved those descriptions many times over.… READ MORE

It’s customary for the recipient of the National Cartoonist Society’s Reuben Award to do the cover of the post-Reubens newsletter/magazine The Cartoon!st. I was so honored this past May, so here is my cover illustration with self-inflicted caricature and oft-repeated gag of me curling the Reuben statue. Sitting at Charles Schulz’s drawing board The Lovely Anna and I are on the way back from the west coast to Minnesota (the no coast) after a fun visit to San Francisco, Santa Rosa and the Sonoma wine country. We have family in this area so it’s always a treat to come out to see them and this beautiful part of the country. While there I did a few speaking engagements and a workshop on caricature at the Cartoon art Museum and the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa.
