Next month I will be one of several cartoonists who will visit Boise, Idaho in support of the Wyakin Warriors Foundation, an organization that helps severely injured veterans for life after their service to our country through education, professional training, job placement and more. Started by NCS member Jeff Bacon, who has been the driving force behind the USO trips many cartoonists have participated in over the last 5 years, the WW Foundation is a fantastic initiative and deserving of everyone’s support. The Good News The Mad Art of Caricature is about to go into its third printing! Distribution through Itasca Book Distributors in bookstores and libraries has really risen in the last several months. TMAoC must be on the shelves of more than a few Barnes and Noble stores. Also Amazon sales have been not just consistent but growing. It is usually ranked anywhere from #4 to #15 under “Books > Arts & Photography > Drawing > Cartooning“ and a similar ranking under “Books > Children’s Books > Arts, Crafts & Music > Art > Drawing”. Back in August MAD announced the next book in it’s MAD’s Greatest Artists series: this one featuring the incomparable Mort Drucker. Today on their excellent official blog, The Idiotical, MAD gives us some more info on the book, including the release date of Oct. 23rd, and a sneak peek at a few of the pieces that will be inside, all selected by Mort himself, including this beauty of a full-color, pull-out vintage poster that is reprinted for the first time in almost 50 years: No-brainer, gotta have it, pre-ordered already sort of book. Later this month I’ll be attending the 2nd annual Kenosha Festival of Cartooning, held in beautiful Kenosha, WI. Last year I was one of the guest speakers, this year I’ll be there as a fan. The line-up of guest cartoonists is pretty fantastic: Dave Coverly (Speed Bump), Greg Cravens (The Buckets, Hubris!), Norm Feuti (Retail, Gil), Michael Jantze (The Norm, Jantze Studios), Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine) and Hilary Price (Rhymes with Orange). The fine folks at MAD Magazine tell me that Bo Confidential, the book I illustrated for them several years ago under a nightmarish deadline, is now available as a digital download through the MAD app on the iPad for the ridiculously exorbitant low price of $1.99 (cheap). There are eventual plans of making it available on other platforms as a regular book download (i.e. the Kindle Fire, Nook color, etc) but no timeframe on that. 18 hours after landing back home from my USO trip, I left again for Charlotte, NC, where I will be drawing caricatures for CNN through Friday at the Democratic National Convention. I have no idea if I will end up on TV or not, but I am bound to be drawing a lot of recognizable folks from politics, media and other forms of celebrity. I will try and post pictures if and when I get a chance to do so.
