I had so many people sign up for the waiting list for my first workshop, I went ahead and scheduled a second one for the weekend before, which was the only time I had available until the snow flies around here. So actually this one will be the FIRST workshop, and the original will be the second. Half the class is already booked by waiting list people and there are only 6 remaining spots so if you want in do not procrastinate. I will not be doing another one in this area until next fall (if then) no matter how many people are on the… READ MORE

It’s hard to believe but I just ordered the seventh printing of The Mad Art of Caricature since its release in November of 2011. That sounds more impressive than it actually is, since the largest print order I’ve ever placed was 4,000 copies. Storage with my distributor is limited so I can’t order any more than that at a time, so I’ve done many smaller runs rather than fewer big ones. With this printing (3,000 copies this time), a total of 24,000 copies of this book will exist on this planet. Placed end to end they would stretch just over 4 miles. That’s a lot… READ MORE

Caricature of Mell I did in honor of his “roasting” at the 2004 NCS Reuben Awards Weekend in Kansas City. The world lost a true cartooning legend today with the passing of Mell Lazarus. Mell has been ailing for some time now so we all knew this was coming, but it’s still hard. The word “legend” gets tossed around a lot these days, but in Mell’s case that title is well bestowed. Of course he is best known as the creator of the long running daily comic strips Momma and Miss Peach, but that was just a part of what made Mell such a giant… READ MORE

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the National Cartoonists Society are getting together in Memphis this month to raise money for their wonderful work. I’ve already blogged about the events taking place next Thursday (60 cartoonists will be visiting the hospital and drawing for patients and their families in the afternoon and having a special dinner on Beale St. that night where they also will be drawing cartoons to be sold in the St. Jude gift shop, and an evening fundraiser with a smaller group of cartoonists with a show and live auction will take place). Another part of this endeavor is an online auction… READ MORE

I doubt this news will ruin anyone’s weekend (except mine) but due to an impossible deadline job that just got dropped on me I will not be able to man my booth at Wizard World Minneapolis this weekend as planned. In fact, you won’t see much in the way of any blog posts from me for a while either. Sleeping will also be a forgotten luxury. READ MORE

I get the occasional email from folks wondering if I ever teach caricature classes anywhere. I do not, at least not on an official basis. Every year I work with new artists that come aboard at my various theme park operations, where I demonstrate the live techniques I have been using for 30 plus years… but that is very informal and not really classes or a structured workshop. I am seriously considering conducting a weekend-long caricature art workshop here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I would set up a negotiated rate at a small hotel in my area, and we would use one of their… READ MORE
