Sometime back I blogged about ToonSeum, the new Pittsburg area cartoon museum that opened last fall. It looks the the museum has been busy with several great exhibits since it’s opening. A new one has just opened this month featuring the work of cartoon legend Morrie Turner of “Wee Pals” fame. The exhibit, Drawn in Black and White: Wee Pals and the Work of Morrie Turner will run until February 27th at the ToonSeum, located in at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, 1o Children’s Way, Pittsburgh, PA. I hate coming back from Hawai’i. It’s not that I hate coming home… by the end of the week I miss my kids, I’m usually bored with sun and surf and ready to get back to business. It’s the trip home that sucks. Any rest I got on vacation is negated by 11 hours of flying and a 4 hour time change loss. I’m more tired right now than when I left for vacation. But I digress. Still crazy busy with a deadline for MAD, so today I am just going to post this reminder again about my guest speaker appearance and inking workshop March 2-5th in St. Louis. Today is the last day you can register at a discounted rate for the St. Louis NCN Minicon. You can still register tomorrow and later, but it’ll be more dough and they do have limited capacity. I thought I’d post some additional info and a reminder about the National Caricaturist Network mini convention happening March 2nd through the 5th at the Drury Inn & Suites in St. Louis, MO. The early bird registration fee deal of only $50.00 ends on January 1st, so you have about two weeks to register to save some money.As I previously posted, I will be the main speaker at the event along with a number of other guest speakers and several mini-workshops. My flat files are overflowing and my walls are covered with originals, so it’s time to start selling off some of the artwork I just don’t have room for anymore. Not mine… I can’t give that crap away. No, this piece I just put up on eBay is by legendary caricature illustrator Bruce Stark, and was published in TV Guide back in April of 1984: Click for a closer look… I bought this from Bruce a number of years ago. It was odd that yesterday, after just getting the sad news about James Kemsley‘s passing, I received something else concerning another cartooning collegaue’s earthly departure. This time the news was a little brighter, even though it’s circumstances are as somber. Back in April, King Feature’s longtime editor Jay Kennedy died in a tragic boating accident when on vacation in Costa Rica. Jay was a great friend to many artists and to the art of cartooning in general. He has been sorely missed. In May of 2002 The Lovely Anna and I went to our third NCS Reuben awards weekend, this one held in sunny Cancun, Mexico. After two previous trips we were finally getting to know a few people and feel somewhat comfortable in the crowd. This year there was a number of boisterous and fun loving cartoonists from Australia we hadn’t met before. This crew were about as friendly and approachable as anyone you will ever meet, and the man leading the charge was a short, round-faced bearded bloke everyone knew as “Kems“.
