A few pictures from Tuesday at the NCN MiniCon: Teresa “Okie Artist” Farrington‘s marketing seminar The “Party Style” competition in action Ed Steckley‘s “Psychology of Caricature” seminar Ed’s enraptured crowd… Sorry about the lack of art pictures and info, but I was swamped finishing up a MAD job, prepping and then conducting my cartoon inking workshop. Monday at the NCN St. Louis MiniCon is in the books. The seminars went well with Joe Bluhm, Marlene Goodman and Dave “Bippy” Boyer all imparting some great information. Joe did a demonstration of a digital painting technique that was terrific. He’s a talented artist and his ability to paint is top notch. I learned a lot from his seminar. Marlene did a talk about using markers with caricature and Dave did his legendary seminar on health and caricatures. The St. Louis NCN MiniCon kicked off nicely last night with an icebreaker reception at the convention hotel. There is a very good turnout for this event, including two artists from Japan, one from Korea and one from Israel! Today’s festivities kick off at 9:30 with an opening meeting and speakers throughout the day including Joe Bluhm. I’ve written several times about the Orphan Works legislation, and it’s implications on freelance illustrators. This post describes it best, but here it is in brief: The Orphan Works Act is a change to copyright law that allows any party (publishers, advertisers) to use a piece of intellectual property (a photo, illustration, cartoon, etc.) if the owner of the copyright of said piece of intellectual property cannot be identified or located. The law requires a ‘reasonable effort’ to search for the copyright owner, but does not define what a ‘reasonable search’ entails. A biopic about the life of MAD and E.C. Comics publisher William M. Gaines has been long rumored and connected to a number of possible directors, actors and studios including HBO. It now seems that the ball is rolling once again on the film project. Yesterday several film websites announced that John Landis, veteran director of comedy classics like Animal House, Blues Brothers and Trading Places, has signed to direct the film and is working on developing the project with screenwriter Joel Eisenberg. It’s that time of year again. Submissions for the National Cartoonists Society‘s divisional Reuben awards need to be received by February 23rd. From the NCS Website: Only work published between the dates of December 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007 will be considered. Please submit published tear sheets when possible and document when and where the work was published. Submissions must be submitted to their respective locations by February 23, 2008. Each submission must be accompanied by an Entry Form and Bio Sheet. Mad Magazine Uses Pulitzer Winners to Tweak Bush I’m assuming this article will be in MAD #487, out on the 19th of this month, but haven’t confirmed that yet with the staff. (UPDATE- Just got the info, yes, the article will be in MAD #487). In short, the article entitled “Why George W. Bush is in Favor of Global Warming” features various reasons illustrated by 10 different Pulitzer prize winning editorial cartoonists.
