It’s that time of year again! The National Cartoonists Society will hold their annual Reuben Awards Weekend on May 28-30th, this year in Jersey City, New Jersey. The NCS just released the details of how to submit work for consideration in the various divisional award categories. Just a reminder… you do NOT have to me an NCS member to have your work be eligible. The only requirements is the work be in published sometime between December 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009. Some weeks back I blogged about this 5 inch tall bobblehead of President Obama as Uncle Sam I designed for filmmaker Ray Griggs as part of the promotion of a movie he is making called “I Want Your Money”. A few people have asked how they can get one. Ray told me yesterday that he is giving away the bobblehead to anyone who makes a $30.oo or more donation towards his film project. The world of caricature lost one of it’s true giants Tuesday. David Levine, probably best known for his caricature illustrations for the New York Times Book Review, died on Dec. 29th at New York Presbyterian Hospital from prostate cancer and other ailments. He was 83 years old. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Levine’s work was as influential on caricature in the 20th century as that of Al Hirschfeld, Mort Drucker or any legend of that art form. The shirts will go on sales in comic books shops in April, 2010, with proceeds going assist the FCBD promotion and $1 from each sale going to Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. I few months back I did a short post singing the praises of Tall Tale Radio, the podcast show that focuses on the cartooning and comics industry. I’m a big fan of the show and an avid listener. The International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA) of which I am a member, started a new tradition this year where they release their list of the ‘Top Ten Most Interesting Faces of the Year“. . . interesting as in most suited for caricature. It’s a fun idea and while everyone and their brother publishes a “Most Whatever of the Year” list in December it’s a pretty unique list compared to most.
