The nominees for the National Cartoonists Society‘s highest honor, The Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year have been released to members for their vote. The nominees are: Stephen Pastis Dan Piraro Richard Thompson Stephen Pastis is the creator of the popular comic strip Pearls Before Swine. Dan Piraro is the mastermind behind the syndicated daily panel cartoon Bizarro, and Richard Thompson writes and draws the syndicated strip Cul de Sac. This is Pastis’s second time on this list, Piraro’s eighth and the first for Thompson. Nominees for the NCS divisional award categories will be announced sometime in March. READ MORE

A new record for the sale of a comic book was set yesterday when a copy of Action Comics #1 sold for one million dollars. Today thousands of 80 year old men are cursing their dead mothers for throwing out the copy they owned in 1938… I’m still a little pissed about the Star Wars bubble gum card collection my mom tossed in 1980. The issue was sold through Metropolis Collectibles and the ComicConnect.com auction site. Some weeks ago I blogged about a relief effort being organized by the National Cartoonists Society Foundation, the charitable arm of the National Cartoonists Society, on behalf of the Hodge family. Disney story artist and Big Idea productions director Tim Hodge‘s son Matthew was seriously injured when his car was struck by a train last August and remains in a coma. Tim being self-employed, the Hodge family has short term medical insurance that will not fully cover all of their bills, and Tim’s available time to work is limited by the care Matthew needs. Bobble Rep, the iPhone app for which I did 543 (yes, the number keeps going up as members of congress get replaced) caricatures for, keeps getting a lot of praise and attention. Developer Ray Griggs called me the other day to say the app was listed as the number one recommended “Educational” app by the just released book Incredible iPhone Apps for Dummies by Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus. Upon getting a copy of the book, I did indeed read a very positive review of the app on page 30, listed first under “Education”. To say the last nine months of my life were filled with a lot of travel would be an understatement of epic proportions. Since April of 2009 I have gone on personal trips to New York, Orlando and London, England and professional trips to Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Sandusky OH and New Jersey here in the U.S. as well as to Colombia, Germany, Kuwait, Iraq and Australia abroad. The National Cartoonists Society Foundation, the charitable “arm” of the NCS, is sponsoring an auction of original cartoon art to benefit the family of an animator who’s son is in a coma as a result of a horrific car accident back in August. The effort is called “Help the Hodges“, and it’s being organized by current NCSF board member Chad Frye. The deadline is looming large for this year’s Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship from the National Cartoonists Society Foundation. From the NCSF Website: Jay Kennedy Scholarship The annual Jay Kennedy Scholarship, in memory of the late King Features editor, was funded by an initial $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation/King Features Syndicate and additional generous donations from Jerry Scott, Jim Borgman, Patrick McDonnell and many other prominent cartoonists. Submissions are adjudicated by a panel of top cartoonists and an award is given to the best college cartoonist.
