The Lovely Anna and Nick at the 2008 Reubens The New York Times published a terrific obituary/article on the late Nick Meglin today. It’s a real tribute to Nick’s importance in the world to see this in the Times. It’s a great read and really gets across what a crucial role Nick played in making MAD the humor and cultural phenomenon it became. It’s also great to see that it mentions his books The Art of Humorous Illustration and Drawing From Within, as well as his illustrations for the Opera News and the two musicals he collaborated on: “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” and “Tim… READ MORE

I thought I’d let followers of the blog know I’m down to only 30 copies of my limited edition Sherlock Holmes print “The Game is Afoot”. This really is a “limited edition” of 450 signed and numbered prints, so once it’s gone it’s gone. I’ll bring a few copies with me to the various Comic Cons I’m doing this summer as long as they last. This was one of my favorite prints to do as I am a bit of a Sherlockian. BTW the actual print does not have the © info on it. READ MORE

This art was for Nick’s “MAD Book” given to him at his retirement Nick Meglin was the only person I ever knew who I would look forward to being insulted by. The world got a little less funny and MAD Magazine lost a large part of its heart and soul yesterday with the sudden passing of Nick from a heart attack. He would have been 83 next month. If there was an official title of “Unsung Hero of MAD Magazine”, Nick would without question wear that crown. While Al Feldstein got a lot of the credit (and MOST of the money) from the success of… READ MORE

Here’s a couple of links to some terrific reads on this and that: Mental Floss has an article on the “15 Secrets of Caricature Artists” by Lela Nargi. Medium contribtor Nell Minow writes about the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Weekend, and specifically about the great line up of speakers and panels that were there, including the MAD Magazine panel.. The Hollywood Reporter…uh… reports about the great Stan Sakai being the first honoree of the Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award from the Kubert School and Atomic Crush Events at Ontario’s Comic Con Revolution earlier this month. –Originally posted 4/21/07 I was thinking the other day about how much the internet has changed the dynamics of freelancing, in terms of how illustrators communicate, conduct and deliver jobs and market their work. For the most part it’s been an invaluable tool, but there is a dark side to it. The easy access and instant communication of the internet often leads to being contacted for jobs that aren’t really jobs. I used to have the same problem when I drew at the theme parks. A few times each summer someone would approach me at the park and ask me to draw something for them… READ MORE

I did the cover illustration for this week’s Commercial Observer featuring New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City major Bill De Blasio. The newspaper was out on Wednesday in the New York City area. The art and the article are also on their website. Everyone on the paper was pleased with the art, and it got a lot of attention in NYC (it even got featured on NY1 morning news)… …but the editors really made me reign in the caricatures, which was kind of disappointing. This was the original sketch: As you can see the final is a lot more portrait-like. C’est la… READ MORE
