What? Another Monday?!? As if the end of the weekend was not bad enough, here comes another step on the rapidly dwindling road that was my work for MAD Magazine! This week was look back as what for a number of years seemed like it would be the final full movie parody to appear in MAD. I’m talking about MAD’s spoof of “Aquaman” from MAD #7 (June 2019) written by my CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin. The reason this seemed this one might be the curtain call for MAD movie parodies is that it was at this point in the MAD timeline, February of 2019, that… READ MORE

Monday AGAIN?? Here we go with yet another step on the crooked path of mediocrity that was my work for MAD Magazine. This week we look back at a kinda-sorta movie parody (but not really) from MAD #6, written by Ian Boothby. This piece was done right as “Mary Poppins Returns” starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda was released. It’s not a parody of the movie but an original story using the characters. That does not count as an actual movie parody of course. It’s a political feature. I happen to have full scans of the final inks of this splash because I had the… READ MORE

I’m at New York Comic Con this weekend! If you can’t make it to the con, you can still get any of the comic con exclusive stuff I am doing in NYC here at my “Virtual Artist’s Alley Table”. The virtual table will be open through 5 PM CDT Sunday Oct 20th. I’ll be selling all the commissions I usually only offer at comic-cons, at the same prices I charge at comic-cons. I only do these twice a year, so now is your chance… and guaranteed deleivery in time for Christmas! What kinds of things do I ONLY do at conventions? My “live caricature” style… READ MORE

The reason I was drawing Mads Mikkelsen (see yesterday’s Sketch o’the Week) live in front of an audience was that I was a guest at the Art-Bubble Comic Arts Festival a few weekends ago in Aarhus, Denmark. There is a big difference between a European Comic Arts Festival and a United States Comic Arts Convention. The former is a more intimate, personal celebration of the art of comics and cartooning, and people who create them. The latter is a huge sea of humanity where the focus is mostly on commerce, cosplay, TV/movies and celebrity photo/autograph ops. Don’t get me wrong, I love doing comic-cons. Amid… READ MORE

I’ve had several sudden cancellations for my workshop here in Minnesota taking place Sept 7-8 in nearby Eagan. Three spots are now open for a workshop that has been sold out for months. These are the only workshop spots still available for 2024. If you were ever considering doing one of these and are nearby or don’t mind traveling, the workshops I have here in Minnesota are by far the best ones to take, if for no other reason than the extra night of fun and camaraderie I host on the Friday night before the workshop weekend. The hotel I do the workshop in is… READ MORE

Last weekend The Lovely Anna and I travelled to Stockbridge, MA for the opening of “What Me Worry? The Art and Humor of MAD Magazine”, an exhibit of original art from the pages of MAD spanning the magazine’s entire 72 year history hanging at the Norman Rockwell Museum. I’ve been to a few exhibits of MAD art, and while they have all been good this one is by far the most comprehensive and complete. Usually these exhibits concentrate on certain eras of MAD, often the early Harvey Kurtzman comic book era or the Al Feldstein years where the format of the magazine is most familiar… READ MORE
