To misquote Mark Twain: “The report of MAD‘s death have been greatly exaggerated” Many news outlets are reporting that MAD is done as of issue #10. That is not the case, and my post yesterday made it very clear that the magazine would continue to publish with issue #11, but would feature new cover art and interiors with reprinted classic material as opposed to all new material. News stand distribution will stop, and the magazine will only be available through current subscriptions and via the direct market (i.e. comic book shops). That is all 100% confirmed as of this writing. That said, these officially stated… READ MORE

I just go back from 13 days in Europe where I thought workshops in Amsterdam and Switzerland, enjoyed some between time in the former and sweated a lot. Here’s one of the warmup sketches the class and I did in Switzerland… UK politician Boris Johnson. READ MORE

I’m still in Amsterdam having just taught a workshop last weekend and then traveling on to Switzerland for another this weekend, so this week is going to be a “MAD Flashback” week where I’ll post looks at some stuff I’ve done for the magazine and for other projects for the MAD guys and DC comics. For a few years MAD published these perfect-bound “bookazines” that revolved around different themes and contained reprint material. I did a few covers for these including this one for “MAD Spoof’s the 80’s”. Everything was done digitally on this except for the spot caricatures on the squares, which I did… READ MORE

Well… okay. Not really “battle” damaged like your favorite action figure variation, but sort of. Books bought wholesale for brick and mortar stores can be returned if unsold within a certain timeframe. Sometimes these returned books come back with a crease on the cover, a bent corner, a little wear on the spine… very minor damage that does not reduce the readability of the book at all, but does preclude the distributor from selling it again as “new”. I picked up a limited supply of these returned but lightly damaged copies from my distributor the other day, and am selling them for a mere $9.99!… READ MORE

Earlier this month I hosted a VERY limited number of students at my home in Burnsville, MN for one of my caricature workshops. I kept this one to only six students, so there was a lot of one-on-one time. Here’s the class illustration. For the record, it wasn’t really cold here at the time (in the 60’s I believe) but I needed a Minnesota gag. Don’t ask about the banana. READ MORE

Whenever I do a festival or comic-con There is always one question I inevitable get asked. Well… two actually. The first is “where’s the closest bathroom?” The second, usually coming from the parents of a kid who is showing me some of his/her artwork, is “is art school worth the time and money?” I got that one three times at last weekend’s NCSFest. I wrote a long-winded post about that a few years ago, and as I have nothing more to add to it, here’s that post again: Should I go to Art School?: I get this question often, especially from young artists (or the… READ MORE

One of the coolest things about NCSFest this past weekend was the “Windows Trail” where over 50 businesses in Huntington Beach signed up for cartoon/comic window display. Each buiness got paired with a cartoonist and they they got custom designed windows for the Festival. I got assigned to local gym “F45” (go figure) so I used a combination of existing art and did some new stuff, all with bodybuilding/fitness/beach themes. Mark Wahlberg is part owner of the gym, thus his inclusion. Here are a few pics. READ MORE
