I’ve finally rescheduled my caricature illustration workshop for August 14-16, 2020 in nearby Eagan, MN. Due to cancellations by students I now have four spots available in this previously sold out workshop. This is a NEW kind of workshop… Caricature Illustration! My other workshops focus on teaching the art of caricature and only sample some of my illustration techniques. I was remiss in not posting this yesterday, which marked the 28th anniversary of the passing of MAD founder and publisher William M. Gaines. I never met Bill. I got my first print assignment from MAD exactly 20 years ago this month. That was eight years after Bill’s passing. MAD has evolved a lot since Bill died, but back in those days the magazine was still very much the “Gaines” MAD, being run by Nick Meglin and John Ficarra, with editors Joe Raiola and Charlie Kadau… even Lenny “The Beard” Brenner was still about doing art production. Then newly minted art director Sam Viviano had… READ MORE

The newest issue of Viz (a UK humor publication) has a couple of pieces I did the art for. The one above is a take-off on an old (and apperently beloved by Brits of a certain age) British sitcom called “Steptoe and Son”, which was adapted here in the U.S. as “Sanford and Son”. Same premise, it’s an older father and son running a junk shop/collector business. I watched multiple episodes to get the feel of the show and the characters… it was damn funny, but pretty dated as you can imagine. The show ran from ’62-’65 and had a revival in the 70’s. The… READ MORE

It seems like every time I post one of these “Daily Coronacature” sketches SOMEONE asks me if it’s digital and/or what app I use. I do a lot of digital art but these daily sketches are all done using something called a “pencil” on something called “paper”… no power required unless you include the lamp overhead. Specifically the pencils in the pics (a Staedler Norica HB 2 and a .7 mm Mechanical pencil with an HB lead) and a kneadable eraser. I use the wood pencil for all the major lines, and the mechanical one for the initial “workign it out” sketch and then the… READ MORE

Believe it or not I just yesterday finished and shipped out the last of the commissions for my “Virtual ECCC Artists Alley Table” event I did in lieu of attending Emerald City Comic Con, which was cancelled in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. I took some extra time on them and it took me a full month to get them all done. Here’s a few of the last of them. BTW I am still doing the ongoing “Corona-Con Virtual Artists Alley Table” offering to do the same comic-con level commissions and products with free US shipping, and will continue to offer this during… READ MORE

I just uploaded the saved livestream video of me going through the process of doing a MAD movie/TV parody to YouTube… so if you missed it you can watch it here: The audio gets out of sync during the video. I don’t know why nor how to fix it. 🙁 READ MORE
