I’ve got my first few workshops for 2026 arranged! I’ll be teaching in cities I’ve never been before… Nashville and Salt Lake City. I limit these classes to 12 students, so there is plenty of one-to-one instruction and feedback and you really get to know your fellow artists. The dynamics of an in-person workshop like this are so much more effective than your typical online class. Video lessons are fine but there is nothing like total immersion, and drawing alongside others. Did you know that I have a YouTube channel? I’ve actually had one for a long time (18 years actually), but I don’t really promote it so maybe a lot of people don’t know I have one. I did my last full workshop of 2025 this past week in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the usual great group and fun time. I have a “One Day Wonder” mini version of the workshop next month on Sat. Don’t look now, but it’s another step on the road that was my work with MAD Magazine. This week we take a peek at the cover of MAD #20, the origins of which are a good lesson in professionalism as an illustrator. This was also the 150th issue featuring some of my work in it. As I’ve discussed in the last couple of “Tom’s MADness” episodes, MAD had essentially become a publication of reprinted material at this time. Here we go with another of the stumbling steps along the path that is the look back at my work for MAD Magazine! This week we have a look at a kinda-sorta two pager for MAD #19, June 2021, written by Benjamin LeClear. Benjamin was (and still is) the senior manager and archivist of the DC Comics Library. Every few years I collect my the drawings from my ‘Sketch o’the Week” feature into a book, and it’s time for yet another release. “Volume 6” is at the printer as we… uh… read, and is now available for presale in The Studio Store. This is the biggest volume yet, with 84 pages of goofy caricatures from the last 20 months or so. The books should land by mid-July, and all pre-orders will ship forthwith! A few weeks ago I was interviewed for the “Cartoon Everything” podcast with Chris “Meesimo” Meesey and Kelly Light. The episode just dropped today! You can watch it on YouTube or down below. I’ve known Chris for a very long time. He was just a kid when he came to work for me as a caricature artist for the operation I had at the time at Six Flags St. Louis, probably in 1995 or so.
