I did a really fun job for Matador Records a few months ago that they just dropped, so I can share it here. Every year the Matador Records label does an end of the year review and sale celebrating the releases of new music by their artists. This year they had me illustrate a scene from a vintage records store featuring caricatures of a lot of really talented musicians and songwriters who debuted new music in 2025. New 2026 Workshops Announced!

I’ve got my first few workshops for 2026 arranged! I’ll be teaching in cities I’ve never been before… Nashville and Salt Lake City. I limit these classes to 12 students, so there is plenty of one-to-one instruction and feedback and you really get to know your fellow artists. The dynamics of an in-person workshop like this are so much more effective than your typical online class. Video lessons are fine but there is nothing like total immersion, and drawing alongside others. Did you know that I have a YouTube channel? I’ve actually had one for a long time (18 years actually), but I don’t really promote it so maybe a lot of people don’t know I have one. I don’t post a lot of videos but every month or so I post one of my “Sketch o’the Week” videos that you would ordinarily only get to see if you were a paid subscriber on my Substack newsletter “The Ink Stained Wretch”. I did my last full workshop of 2025 this past week in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the usual great group and fun time. I have a “One Day Wonder” mini version of the workshop next month on Sat. MADness #150- Kaiju Cover!

Don’t look now, but it’s another step on the road that was my work with MAD Magazine. This week we take a peek at the cover of MAD #20, the origins of which are a good lesson in professionalism as an illustrator. This was also the 150th issue featuring some of my work in it. As I’ve discussed in the last couple of “Tom’s MADness” episodes, MAD had essentially become a publication of reprinted material at this time. Here we go with another of the stumbling steps along the path that is the look back at my work for MAD Magazine! This week we have a look at a kinda-sorta two pager for MAD #19, June 2021, written by Benjamin LeClear. Benjamin was (and still is) the senior manager and archivist of the DC Comics Library.
