The Dreaded Deadline Demon

November 10th, 2008 | Posted in General

Not really a deadline per se today, but after hoping to write a long post about the National Caricaturist Network Convention and how joining the organization changed my career, I am now coming to the realization that is not going to happen today. Too much to catch up on and not enough time. So, the Demon makes an appearance today, with the promise of that NCN post tomorrow. On the plus side, I deadlifted 385 lbs for six reps this morning and didn’t throw up. Much. READ MORE

On the Road Home

Coming back from the big National Caricaturist Network convention in Raleigh today. A beautiful town and a very fun time. As usual the artwork produced by the competing caricaturists was amazing and the “competition room” was brimming over with incredible caricatures that ran the gamut from the near portrait in charcoal to hyper exaggerated illustrations in acrylic. There was even some wood cut work! It’ll be a long trip home with a layover in Atlanta (again). I will blog about the convention more next week. The picture above is the artwork of my friend Jeremy Townsend. Below are just a few of the “walls” of… READ MORE

Halted Halloween

November 3rd, 2008 | Posted in General

The last few year’s running The Lovely Anna and I have dressed up for Halloween and met friends out on the town for a little fun and costume gazing. This year because we have older kids and they have activities, parties, etc., we were unable to leave the house until about 10:30 pm. Fortunately the friends we were going to hang out with were eschewing the craziness of downtown Minneapolis for a club in the ‘burbs close by. Therefore we planned to go out late and got our costumes together. Anna went as “bad Chinese food”, making a takeout box and fortune cookies with chopsticks.… READ MORE

Q: Yesterday in your blog you mentioned wondering what it would have been like to have worked at MAD during the black and white era. When did MAD “officially” switch to a color format? Did you do any work for them before the switch to color, or any black and white work at all? A: MAD‘s switch to color and slick paper stock didn’t actually happen all at once. “Officially” the first issue that announced a full time switch was #403. However the previous few issues were either special issues, had special color features in them combining the old and new paper stock or were… READ MORE

Insurance and Treatments for Autism?

October 25th, 2008 | Posted in General

Our Elizabeth and one of her favorites, Rachel Ray As the parent of an autistic child, no ones knows better than I both the difficulties and expenses involved with raising a kid with autism. As a self employed person, it’s doubly tough as health insurance is a wallet buster under the best of circumstances, let alone when one of your kids has a disability. Autism isn’t nearly as expensive to deal with as other disabilities might be… we didn’t have to remodel our home to accommodate a wheelchair for example. Still there are plenty of extra expenses involved including doctors visits, medication and the like.… READ MORE

Phone-a-Phriend Phanatic

Today’s the day I am sitting by the phone in case I am called upon to be a “Phone-a-Friend” lifeline for my pal and fellow caricaturist Jim Batts, who is taping his show this afternoon in New York City. Actually the way this works is he is there and ready to compete if called upon. It is possible he might not be picked from the pool of possible contestants during the taping sessions he is scheduled for. I doubt that, as he is just the kind of guy they’d want on the show… he’s quirky, has an interesting career and he knows a #%^$*@ lot… READ MORE
