Under the Knife

By the time this blog entry gets posted, I should be sitting in the pre-op area waiting to get surgery to repair one of my left rotator cuff tendons. The decision to get the surgery did not come lightly. I actually already have a decent tear in the same tendon in my right shoulder. That injury happened about 22 years ago. I was weightlifting in the basement of our apartment complex with a couple of roommates in Minneapolis. during the slow downward movement of a barbell behind-the-neck press, I felt a searing pain in my right shoulder and I dropped the weights as my shoulder… READ MORE

New Caricature/Tattoo Location

March 16th, 2009 | Posted in General

I actually live two lives (and NO, one does not involve my batsuit). In one I am a mild mannered freelance illustrator and cartoonist, working out of a studio in my home. In the other I am an entrepreneur that owns and runs caricature, airbrush T-shirt and airbrush tattoos retail/theme park operations in 3 different states with over 60 people working for me at the height of the summer season… a season that is right around the corner from opening. Most of last week and this weekend I spent opening my latest location, a combo caricature/airbrush tattoo cart inside the Mall of America’s “Nickelodeon Universe”… READ MORE

MAD Exclusive Web Content

A few web only features and parodies are beginning to appear on MAD‘s website, including this little gem: Click image to see a larger version on the MAD website And this one: Click image to see a larger version on the MAD website There are a several more parody ads and magazine posters on the website as well, including the Phelps “High Times” cover and the Madoff movie poster “Scumbag Billionaire” I showed on the site before. A sign of the future? Maybe. I don’t know exactly what the plans are for the website, but with 3 months between issues there is a lot of… READ MORE

Watching the “Watchmen”- A Review

March 9th, 2009 | Posted in General

Disclaimer: Spoilers clearly marked, and there aren’t many… From “Botchmen” in MAD #499 The “Watchmen” and I go way back. I can’t credit it as the reason I got interested in comic books again. That distinction belongs to Frank Miller‘s “The Dark Knight Returns“. However I can say that, even more than Miller’s masterwork, “Watchmen” showed me that comics can be as literarily relevant as any novel. I was given my first copy as a gift for being a groomsman in my friend and fellow cartoonist Mark Engblom‘s wedding. Having not read it before, I remember Mark’s general comments about it to me being the… READ MORE

Super Capers Comic, Trailer, et al…

March 6th, 2009 | Posted in General

Here’s the trailer for the film… On March 20th the movie I worked on, “Supercapers”, is going to be shown in select theaters. Having gotten a chance to meet writer/director Ray Griggs last weekend at Wondercon and getting to see the entire film, I am really hoping it will do well enough to get national distribution. It’s silly, fun movie that pays homage to some of the films and directors that shaped Ray’s desires to become a filmmaker like Star Wars, Back to the Future, Etc. It also is a tribute to the superhero genre… and not in the dark, depressed way… READ MORE

More WonderCon

March 5th, 2009 | Posted in General

I finally have a few minutes to write further about my experience at WonderCon in San Francisco last weekend. I don’t “do” a lot of comic conventions because MAD is sort of the red headed stepchild of comics and thus I am more of an odd man out than a typical professional guest.¬¨‚Ć Even so I do like to get out and see these events occasionally, mainly because they are a lot of fun and full of cool things to see and people to meet. Sadly, and it seems like AS USUAL, I had a job I needed to work on with a Monday deadline… READ MORE

Magical Audiobooks Revisited

February 20th, 2009 | Posted in General

Whew. In the last 4 1/2 weeks I have done back to back projects for MAD (6 page parody of the movie “Watchmen”) and a 13 page comic book (with inks by the great Tom Nguyen) promoting the movie “Super Capers”, which will be given away at WonderCon next weekend in San Francisco, as well ans a handful of smaller jobs. That’s a lot of hours spend in the studio penciling, inking and coloring. How many hours? I don’t know, I never keep track of the time. However I can measure it in audiobooks. It took me the entire seven books in the Harry Potter… READ MORE
