If you haven’t read any of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier‘s “Groo the Wanderer” comics, then you are missing out on on one of the greatest humorous comics ever created, and that is most definitely NOT hyperbole. Groo’s been around for over 40 years, and his adventures have been published by five differents labels over the decades, currently Dark Horse Comics. There are a LOT of Groo comics out there, including a 120 issue run published by Marvel/Epic from 1985-1995, and many, many multiple issue mini-series. Fortunately they are all enjoyable stories in themselves so you need not start at his first appearance. In fact,… READ MORE
I had a lot of fun doing that illustration for CNN’s “History of the Sitcom” series, but one of the disappointing things about doing it was all the great characters we had to leave out. Not just the many shows that were not represented at all in the art, but important characters from depicted shows that weren’t included. In order to represent as many shows as possible, they had me only draw a few characters from each show. For the most part it worked. For example, only drawing Jimmy Walker and Esther Rolle from “Good Times” left out some other great main actors from the… READ MORE
Q: Do you ever get criticized or praised for people perceiving your work as similar to Mort Drucker? I see the differences, but just was wondering how you as an artist have dealt with that comparison. A: I spent 20 years drawing caricature/likeness based movie and TV parodies for MAD Magazine. The comparisons to Mort Drucker and other famous MAD artists like Jack Davis, Angelo Torres, etc are inevitable. I have a drawing style based on line (as opposed to values like a painter), my caricatures lean more toward likeness than exaggeration, and my storytelling comes from a comic book background. Anyone who does that… READ MORE
Last year’s virtual NCSFest and Reuben Awards weekend, conducted jointly with the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival, was a pretty big success, so the National Cartoonists Society is doing it again in 2021. On October 15th & 16th, the NCS will live stream a combination of speaker/panel programming and the Reuben Awards themselves on NCSFEST.com and COMICARTFESTIVAL.com, which will intermingled with the live-streamed programming of the Lakes Festival taking place simultaneously from Kendall, UK. There is also some events that both the NSC and the Lakes folks will be doing together. Just like last year, the programing will run over a specified time, but individual… READ MORE
I’ve been getting a number of inquiries about if the original art from Desmond Devlin and my upcoming book of movie parodies will be for sale. The answer is yes, some of it, eventually. A number of the pages from the book are already spoken for through the different tiers we had during our Indiegogo campaign. All the pages from the parodies of “Psycho” and “Toy Story 4” will be going to our two super-ultra-uber “Megalomanic” backers. They each both chose the movie they wanted us to do and sponsored the entire parody, and get the entire set of pages from their spoof. Those at… READ MORE
I did this acrylic painting back in the early 2000’s for a book called “Memories of a Munchkin” which was an illustrated autobiography of a gentleman named Mienhardt Raabe, assisted and put together by publisher Daniel Kinske. Mr. Raabe was one of the last surviving cast members of the Wizard of Oz, specifically of the Munchkins. He played the munchkin coroner. “Memories of a Munchkin” was published in 2005, and contained a lot of terrific OZ art done for the book, including pieces by Al Hirschfeld, Jack Davis, Mort Drucker… it’s a long list. Daniel has a new book out in a similar vein, but this one… READ MORE
Q: Hi Tom, hope all is well with you. I love reading your Sunday Mailbags. Thank you for sharing with us. I have a question. To tell you a little about myself, I am 46 years old. I have depression (genetic). I have tried all coping tools such as medications or therapy. Unfortunately, they don’t work. I have always been interested in weightlifting but don’t know how to start. I am steering clear of the fitness centers. Was thinking about investing in the dumbbells and work out in my empty den. I know it’s a serious lifelong commitment. Would you be open to sharing any… READ MORE
