Q: Now that you are an established comic artists with a good rep, how useful are societies and guilds and the like? Is it just for fun and networking or do they have your back when times get tough? I was shocked to hear that comic book artists don’t have a union. Should they have one? A: There is no real “union” for comics artists, but there are a number of different professional industry organizations, trade unions, guilds, and societies, that pertain to comic book artists/cartoonists. They range from professional networks to social clubs to organized representation. Visual arts being such a varied field with… READ MORE

Some months ago Quentin Tarantino released a novelized version of his film “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”, and it was just announced that there is a deluxe hardcover version coming out in November that will include a bunch of extra goodies… including the second parody Andrew Secunda and I did of the fictional “Bounty Law” TV show for a mini-MAD that was exclusive to the “Collector’s Edition Ultra HD Blu-Ray” of the film. That mini-MAD was pretty hard to come by, but I would think this hardcover book will be easy to get. If you didn’t get the Blu-Ray exclusive one, here’s your chance… READ MORE

As promised, here’s the cover of Des Devlin and my upcoming book, CLAPTRAP. Like the rest of the book, this was a collaborative effort. The concept was mine but Des contributed a good number of the gags (okay, he wrote all the funny ones). This is a “wraparound” cover so I had to consider the spine and fold areas in the center when doing the composition. This was a nice breather from doing the interiors, but it’s back to that tomorrow! I took this picture (and maaaaaaybe did a little photoshop work on it) years ago as part of a gag for a presentation I was doing on cartooning. Then I posted it on my blog. It’s become a frequently used meme image and not a week goes by without someone sending me an email saying they saw it on Reddit or Facebook or wherever and did I know someone was using it? Yes, I do. Can I do anything about it? No, I can’t. It’s out there and there is no reeling it back in. I think if I had a dime for everytime someone… READ MORE

My CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin and I have been keeping our work on the book purposefully under wraps after revealing the splash pages for four different parodies, but this week we thought we’d give you another sneak peek at some of the book… this time part of the cover art! Last week I decided to take a break from working on the interiors of the book to tackle the cover. I had to wait to do the cover until we had all our target movies selected, and once we did I decided to wait a bit longer so I could have a bunch of the… READ MORE

If you haven’t read any of Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier‘s “Groo the Wanderer” comics, then you are missing out on on one of the greatest humorous comics ever created, and that is most definitely NOT hyperbole. Groo’s been around for over 40 years, and his adventures have been published by five differents labels over the decades, currently Dark Horse Comics. There are a LOT of Groo comics out there, including a 120 issue run published by Marvel/Epic from 1985-1995, and many, many multiple issue mini-series. Fortunately they are all enjoyable stories in themselves so you need not start at his first appearance. In fact,… READ MORE
