I learned a lot of stuff about Australia while visiting Sydney and the Hunter Valley this past week for the 25th annual ACA Stanley Awards. Here are some highlights: Koalas may look cuddly but they have big F%$#% claws and will scalp you if you bother them. What in the U.S. is the turn signal lever in the steering column of cars is instead the windshield wiper control in Australia. Cars driving down the road on a dry, sunny day with their windshield wipers going are being driven by American/European tourists. Australia is brimming with fantastic caricature artists. I was honored to be the presenter… READ MORE

Its amazing how quickly the cynics come out when something like what happened with the “Bobble Rep” app last week takes place. While the vast majority of people I have heard and read comments from are supportive of the app and our trouble with Apple, a few have come out of the woodwork to malign and cast stones at myself and app developer Ray Griggs. Most of these people are woefully uniformed and guilty of the usual crime of the internet serial commenter… that being not bothering to read the entire story but casting judgment based on a headline. So, here are some of the… READ MORE

I’m currently in Sydney, Australia for the 2009 Stanley Awards for the Australian Cartoonists Association. Just got back from the awards ceremony itself. Australia has a rich history of cartooning and has some incredible talent. The ACA is a terrific organization and the people here have made us feel very welcome. I did a presentation and a caricature workshop on Saturday, and attended several other panels and presentations as well. Very nicely organized and some great speakers. The main speaker of the weekend was Pat Oliphant, the influential and brilliant political cartoonist who was born and raised in Australia but had lived and worked in… READ MORE

Yep, I’m off again on the final leg of what has been an insane year of traveling and speaking at cartoonists events and other functions… five continents in the last 5 months. This time I’m taking The Lovely Anna along to Sydney, Australia where I will be speaking and doing a caricature workshop at the Australian Cartoonists Associations Stanley Awards Weekend. However this time we will be staying for a week to see the sights including some time in the Hunter Valley vineyard area. Look for a report from the Stanleys and a few others from “down under” over the next week, as well as… READ MORE

EDIT– Apple reconsidered its decision and approved the Bobble Rep app after a media storm of protest was set off by this innocent little rant on my insignificant little blog. Below is the original blog post: Just yesterday I was complaining about how Apple sometimes treats its customers as if they were stupid. I had no idea how right I was. Back in the late summer movie director/entrepreneur Ray Griggs, for whom I did all that art for his movie “Super Capers“, approached me with an idea for an iPhone app. The concept was a database of all the members of the United States Congress… READ MORE

Hermann Mejia, me, Mark Fredrickson and Sam Viviano For the past two days I’ve been having fun at the annual International Society of Caricature Artists‘s convention, held this year in Sandusky, Ohio at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort. Every year this convention is something special, but this year they had four guests of honor/speakers, all from MAD Magazine. They included MAD art director and longtime MAD artist Sam Viviano, MAD cover artist Mark Fredrickson, MAD illustrator Hermann Mejia and myself. I was greatly looking forward to not only seeing my good friend Sam and many other friends for the ISCA, but as I had never met… READ MORE

I am still not over my jetlag from the USP trip and now I am off to Sandusky, Ohio for the ISCA convention where I am a guest speaker. The Lovely Anna is only tolerating this because she is going to go with me to Australia for the Stanleys next week. At some point I may need to do some work to pay for some of this stuff… Who am I kidding? I got up at 4:00 am to finish a job this morning before flying out and have two more jobs to work on with me.
