Bizarreness at Krüger Workshop?

October 8th, 2010 | Posted in General

üü Caricature and portrait painting master Sebastian Krüger is one of the most highly respected artists working in the field today. I’ve had the privilege of meeting him a few times at a couple of conventions for the International Society of Caricature Artists (formerly the National Caricaturist Network), and commissioned him to do the caricature of me above. Krüger rarely does caricatures anymore… these days he does mostly fine art paintings of pop culture celebrities for galleries. That’s a real shame as his caricature illustrations were mind-numbingly outstanding, but I don’t think he ever really felt like he was a caricaturist. He is obviously doing… READ MORE

Deadlifts with Olympic Hex Bar

We interrupt this art blog for a little fitness discussion… Today was “Back Day” at Renegade Fitness, the local gym where I have been working out for several years now. About 10 minutes into the workout, a delivery guy drops by with the gym’s newest piece of equipment… an Olympic hex bar. Good timing, since dead lifts were the next lift for the workout. A hex bar is so called because it’s shaped in a hexagonal form making it easy to step in and out of the bar and centering the weight on each side, ideal for shrugs and dead lifts. Doing dead lifts… READ MORE

Don’t Mess with Sergio

August 30th, 2010 | Posted in General

MAD writer extraordinaire Desmond Devlin sent me this link to a highly interesting article about a lively exchange between comic book writer Mark Waid and Sergio Aragon?¬©s at last night’s Harvey Awards. Mark gave a keynote speech about copyrights, public domain and the dawning new era of electronic publishing where he took the viewpoint that, with regard to rampant piracy on the internet, the “genie is out of the bottle” and that energy expended in efforts to protect ownership would be better served being used to figure out how to profit from one’s intellectual property. Sergio strongly disagreed and a heated discussion ensued. I wonder… READ MORE

The Circus is in Town…

Illustration done for Minneapolis Star Tribune last fall Oh Boy! Brett Favre is back in town and going to play for the Minnesota Vikings! Yawwwn. I’m a Minnesota guy in most things, but as far as sports go, the only team I care about around here are the Minnesota Twins. I can’t stand the NBA and don’t know or want to know about hockey, so the Timberwolves and Wild hold zero interest for me. Baseball is my favorite pro sport and I love the Twins and all they represent. They play the game the right way, develop their own players and make smart moves that… READ MORE

Coolest Golf Cart EVER

I’ve been doing a lot of work over the last two years for filmmaker Ray Griggs, including illustrations, animations and a promotional comic book for his superhero spoof movie Super Capers, storyboards, the movie poster and animated character design for his latest film project “I Want Your Money” and illustration for iPhone and iPad apps like Bobble Rep. In the process Ray has become a good friend… he is a comic book geek at heart. Case in point: Ray has an office on the Warner Bros. studio property in California, and recently got a permit to have a golf cart on the lot. Rather than… READ MORE

Latest Illustration for Penthouse

August 10th, 2010 | Posted in Freelancing

I do a few illustrations a year for Penthouse, which I have no qualms about doing so long as I am not asked to do anything pornographic. This is something they understand and only give me a call when they need a humorous illustration for an article that isn’t too “blue”. They are really great to work with. The September issue has a full page illustration I did for a humorous article about why guys have “sex on the brain” i.e. it’s all some guys think about. Initially the art director wanted me to do an image of a guy with his brain coming out… READ MORE
