Click for a closer look… This Friday’s sneak peek of my upcoming book The Mad Art of Caricature! is the beginning of Chapter 4: Drawing and Caricaturing the Features. This chapter details how to draw and caricatures the main facial features: the eyes, the nose, and the mouth. While it incorporates much of the information found in my online tutorials, this chapter goes into much more detail and includes dozens of additional illustrations . This year is the 50th anniversary of Spy vs. Spy, and MAD has been busy with the celebrations. One of the cooler things they did was to produce a bunch of prototype, unpainted Spy figures and send them out to a variety of artists and sculptors, inviting them to make their own custom Spy. They had a glass case full of the resulting figures at Comic-Con last month, and have been busy posting images of a new one every day on their shiny new blog, The Idiotical. Chapter 2- Basic Caricature Theory explains several of the basic theories behind caricature, exaggeration, likeness…how to see it and how to draw it. Q: Has anyone ever explained the real meaning of “IND” on the cover of MAD? I saw an interview where the answer was an acronym for “Stupidity is Timeless” but ???? A: For those not familiar with this, here is an example from a recent MAD cover: There are a couple of MAD secrets that few know about, and the “IND” on the cover is one of them.
