This segment (which I did NOT work on) aired on the Cartoon Network’s animated MAD show recently, and if you hang out on the internet at all you will find it a total riot: READ MORE

Q:Since I was a kid, I always wondered about Alfred E. Newman. He is one freaky looking guy, with one eye higher than the other. And that creepy smile… ¬¨‚He’s an icon, yet also genetics-gone-awry. Who created him, and when? I’ve always been curious about Mad’s Cover Boy. A: Ahhhh… who created Alfred E. Neumen? That’s a question that has no certain answer, but a lot of interesting history. An ad for dentistry, circa 1910 Pictures like the ones above have been cropping up since MAD first adopted the image of the smiling, idiotic boy who would eventually be known as Alfred E. Neuman. The… READ MORE

I’m in the lovely town of Kenosha, Wisconsin, right now taking part in the first annual Kenosha Festival of Cartooning. As you can see from the poster above, there is a pretty terrific line-up of cartoonists speaking and participating in panel discussions over the three-day festival. Things actually kicked off yesterday, but I did not participate in any of the public presentations. I spoke to an illustration class at Carthage College. Some of the students didn’t even fall asleep . . . or maybe they just didn’t snore. Anyway it was fun and we did a little drawing at the end. Today I will be… READ MORE

About two weeks ago I posted these images briefly because the Cartoon Network’s website listed the “Konan the Kardashian” segment I worked on as airing on Aug. 29th. It turned out that was wrong and it did not air in that episode, but did air last night. So, here again are a few images from that segment (plus one new one): Fun episode to work on… but I always say that, don’t I? READ MORE

Finally, a little good news on the book’s production and delivery schedule. My printer was able to get our print run squeezed in earlier than expected, and the book is on the press as I speak . . . uh . . . type. Barring any printing run disasters the bound books should ship out on Sept. 12th from Korea, and would arrive here in Minnesota on or around October 5th. I’m knocking on wood right now, as there are still many potential issues that could slow that process down…a messed up print run, tsunamis and such. Still, this is good news and once again… READ MORE

As promised, here are a few of the designs I did for one of the segments in last night’s episode of MAD on the Cartoon Network: From “Capt. America’s Got Talent”: Originally I did this character with a “shake weight” as part of a gag but it got changed to a spring-based chest exerciser… too much? READ MORE

The chapter contains 33 pages and over 90 illustrations! You can preview other chapters here. The book is currently under production in Korea, and will shortly be shipping to my doorstep…immediately… READ MORE

This year is the 50th anniversary of Spy vs. Spy, and MAD has been busy with the celebrations. One of the cooler things they did was to produce a bunch of prototype, unpainted Spy figures and send them out to a variety of artists and sculptors, inviting them to make their own custom Spy. They had a glass case full of the resulting figures at Comic-Con last month, and have been busy posting images of a new one every day on their shiny new blog, The Idiotical. The one above was done by my friend, fellow NCS member and the creator of Foxtrot, Bill Amend.… READ MORE
