Caricatures at the DNC- Charlotte

September 7th, 2012 | Posted in News

Image courtesy and ©2012 CNN I just wrapped up my week of doing caricatures at the CNN Grill in Charlotte during the Democratic National Convention. Headed back today. Next week I’ll be posting more details about it, hopefully including some pictures sent to me by some of the CNN photographers. I drew a lot of celebrities, politicians and news people. Here’s a small sampling of some of the subjects I drew: Rosario Dawson (pictured) Jay Thomas Richard Schiff Gen. Wesley Clark Rep. Barney Frank- MA Jessica Alba Darell Hammond Wayne Knight Tony Shalhoub Gov. David Paterson- NY Dave Barry Jeff Bridges Rev. Jesse Jackson Gov.… READ MORE

Digital Bo

The fine folks at MAD Magazine tell me that Bo Confidential, the book I illustrated for them several years ago under a nightmarish deadline, is now available as a digital download through the MAD app on the iPad for the ridiculously exorbitant low price of $1.99 (cheap). There are eventual plans of making it available on other platforms as a regular book download (i.e. the Kindle Fire, Nook color, etc) but no timeframe on that. It is cool that the MAD app is adding things like this to the mix of available content on the iPad. They already have made special issues like the MAD… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

September 5th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Since this week is mostly dedicated to my recent USO trip, here’s an actual drawing I did on the USS Enterprise. Josh was one of the many Navy folks I met and drew, and he was kind enough to make a copy of it and give it to me when I was aboard. It got a little wrinkled on the trip home. Time about 8 minutes, but we chatted for a bit longer. Come home safely, Josh! READ MORE

NSC USO Tour- CLASSIFIED

September 4th, 2012 | Posted in General

I originally had a long post here describing our experience on the recent NCS USO to the middle east, but was asked to significantly modify it because of sensitivity to the presence of the US military in certain locations in the area which shall remain nameless. I’m not quite sure why, since all the information I posted here and much more including, literally, the addresses of the bases and names of the very units and squadrons (if any) posted there are plainly available in Wikipedia and many other places on the internet, but rules is rules. Rather than rewrite the post, I’m just deleting it.… READ MORE

Drawing Lefties Righthanded- DNC in Charlotte

September 3rd, 2012 | Posted in News

18 hours after landing back home from my USO trip, I left again for Charlotte, NC, where I will be drawing caricatures for CNN through Friday at the Democratic National Convention. I have no idea if I will end up on TV or not, but I am bound to be drawing a lot of recognizable folks from politics, media and other forms of celebrity. I will try and post pictures if and when I get a chance to do so. Hopefully no U.S. congress members will realize I’m the guy who did their caricatures for the BobbleRep app. I also hope I won’t have to… READ MORE

USO-NCS Tour 2012- Persian Gulf and USS Enterprise

September 3rd, 2012 | Posted in General

I did this spot illustration for the tour and a postcard we gave away. Each artist had their own card. Believe it or not a few sailors didn’t get the joke. The National Cartoonists Society has a long tradition supporting the men and women serving our country in the U.S. military. In fact, the NCS originally formed from a group of cartoonists who did chalk talks for US troops during World War II, and continued to visit active military personnel during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Several years ago the NCS and the USO once again teamed up to renew this tradition of sending groups… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: Hi Tom, I enjoy your illustrations in Mad Magazine.¬¨‚Ć I was wanting to get a Sergio Aragones autograph.¬¨‚Ć How can I get one? A: Everybody want’s Sergio’s autograph! Or Mort Drucker‘s, or Sam Viviano‘s, or… It’s common courtesy among professionals not to give out their personal contact info, including mailing addresses. However MAD is very good at forwarding correspondence to individual artists. I sometimes get big envelopes from MAD which contains an unopened envelope or package from someone who wanted me to autograph something or to just write me a note. What is appropriate to send? That’s a good additional question as what you… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

August 29th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

As I posted on Monday, I am out of the country right now to parts undisclosed on a USO trip with a bunch of other cartoonists, drawing drawings and shaking hands with our service men and women serving overseas in the active war zone. Thus, this week’s sketch is a pencil rough of an illustration I am doing for a client. Clicky to embiggen. Will post final art down the road sometime. READ MORE
