Elementary, My Dear Watson

September 14th, 2012 | Posted in General

Dr. Watson! The other day I posted a picture of my dog on my Facebook page, and someone asked me if I’d ever drawn him. Oh, yes. He has made cameo appearances in many of my illustrations, although I don’t think I’ve snuck him into MAD yet. His name is Dr. Watson, and he’s an almost 3 year old Lhasa Poo (Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix). He’s my studio buddy, and he hangs out with me while I work all day (and sometimes all night). He really is that cute… he looks like a toy. Here he is hamming it up in a few illustrations of mine… READ MORE

Kenosha Festival of Cartooning: Sept. 27-29th

September 13th, 2012 | Posted in News

Later this month I’ll be attending the 2nd annual Kenosha Festival of Cartooning, held in beautiful Kenosha, WI. Last year I was one of the guest speakers, this year I’ll be there as a fan. The line-up of guest cartoonists is pretty fantastic: Dave Coverly (Speed Bump), Greg Cravens (The Buckets, Hubris!), Norm Feuti (Retail, Gil), Michael Jantze (The Norm, Jantze Studios), Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine) and Hilary Price (Rhymes with Orange). Also a big deal this year is the silent auction of original cartoon art, with the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin’s Kenosha Clinic and also Margaret Ann’s Place, a… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

September 12th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

It will be interesting to see how many people recognize this week’s SotW subject. She’s not famous for being on TV or in the movies, but I am sure many thousands of people will know exactly who she is. My only hint is to say I’ve been flying on a lot of airplanes lately. UPDATE: For all of you hopelessly guessing subjects who in no way resemble the above caricature, the drawing above is Katherine Lee aka “Deltalina”, the “star” of Delta Airlines pre-flight safety video: If you’ve been on a Delta flight in the last 4-5 years, you’ll recognize her. The video is… READ MORE

From Russia With Love

September 11th, 2012 | Posted in General

I received a great email today from a fellow caricaturist/illustrator who hails from Russia, telling me a story of how he got inspired to draw caricatures as a kid by a series of stickers featuring caricature art that came in packages of chewing gum: Clicky to Embiggen That is pretty cool. . . except of course that these stickers are all examples of copyright infringement. There are a lot of my old, OLD caricature samples, as well as a John Kascht, a Sebastian Kr?¬?ger, what I think is a Ben Burgraff and two (Hugh Grant and Gerard Depardieu) that look familiar but I do not… READ MORE

Paying the Piper

All my traveling the last month (ok… the whole %@#$! summer) is catching up to me. I will try and post about our time on the USS Enterprise and the gig at the CNN Grill sometime this week, but I am way behind on several projects. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: When drawing a MAD parody, are the artists assigned the project without any say in who appointed the job, or do you get to lobby to work on a specific task that you would love to take part in (i.e. the new Batman movie)? A: The artist has no say in what movie or TV show they get assigned. That is entirely up to the editorial staff. That’s not to say an artist can’t make a case for why they should be strongly considered for a particular movie or TV show, but it rarely makes any difference. When the Tim Burton remake of Planet… READ MORE

Get in Line for the Hirschfeld Exhibit in St. Louis

September 8th, 2012 | Posted in News

If you are near the St. Louis area, or intend to visit there before the end of the year, you might want to make time to stop by the Sheldon Art Galleries to see the Al Hirschfeld’s Jazz and Broadway Scrapbook exhibit: From the Sheldon Art Galleries website: Al Hirschfeld’s Jazz and Broadway Scrapbook, the first major retrospective of the artist to be mounted in his hometown, will feature more than 100 original drawings, paintings, prints, collages, posters and ephemera from his long and important career, and reveals a heretofore unexplored, lifelong fascination with jazz. In addition to his artwork, the installation will feature his… READ MORE

More from the CNN Grill

The video above aired on CNN several times the last day or so. I am mentioned and briefly shown drawing, followed by a look at the wall of caricatures, for which I am indirectly credited (or blamed). In fact, only a few of the caricatures shown above I actually did (Adrian Grenier, Hill Harper, Dennis and Elizabeth Kucinich, Elijah Cummings, Bill Richardson, Jesse Jackson, and a few others). Most of the CNN people were drawn at the Republican National Convention in Tampa by caricaturist Glenn Ferguson, especially the one of Anderson Cooper, which he complains about on the video. I did the one of Dana… READ MORE
