POLITICO has a small (and I mean TINY) sneak peek of the Mark Fredrickson cover art for MAD #523, coming out in just a few weeks. This cover is interesting to me for a number of reasons: This is the first cover of MAD (not counting specials, etc) where the Spies are the main focus of the gag. The Spies have been on a few covers as parts of montage images, borders, etc. It’s one of the very few without Alfred as part of the main gag (they snuck him into the “O” on the lower headline) I got to see part of the cover… READ MORE

Figured I might as well round off the “Doctor Who” sketch collection with one of the just-announced twelve Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Of course, we dont; really know what he’ll look like as the Doctor… might have wild hair, or a mustache and goatee… who knows? We’ll find out in December. Meanwhile, don’t forget you can now get Peter added to my Doctor Who limited edition print for only $10 extra bucks!: READ MORE

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at a special event honoring a very special man. “From the Beginning: Jack Davis” was an exhibit of the work of the great cartoonist, caricaturist, and humorous illustrator at a terrific little gallery called the Glynn Art Association in Jack’s adopted hometown of St. Simons Island on coastal Georgia. Jack is easily one of the most beloved and honored cartoonists of the last century, but this exhibit was extra-special because it was organized and hosted by a local gallery… and it really opened the eyes of his neighbors as to who Jack really is.… READ MORE

The good news: On Sunday, the BBC announced that veteran British actor Peter Capaldi would portray the 12th incarnation of the Doctor in the next season of the mega-popular series Doctor Who. The bad news: My limited edition print of the eleven official Doctors is suddenly out of date… a serious problem when you are talking about Time Lords. Not to worry, Whovians! I have added a special “12th Doctor” option to those who want to get a copy of “The Doctor is In“, my limited edition Doctor Who print. For an extra $10 (cheap) I will painstakingly hand draw the 12th doctor (aka Peter… READ MORE

Q: In your previous mailbag reply you addressed the large size of your original art for MAD. However my main question to you is, working traditionally is always good, but how exactly do you scan them in? Does MAD scan them for you, or you have a kickass large scanner in your studio? If you do, can you advise on a larger then a4 scanner which is good and reasonably affordable as well online.. I’m from Singapore and its extremely hard to find a larger then a4 scanner here. A: The previous mailbag referred to is here, and briefly the question was why is my… READ MORE

MAD scribe extraordinaire Desmond Devlin sent me a link to this gem from 2001. It’s a show called “Theater Talk”, and features the great Art Spiegelman visiting the great Al Hirschfeld‘s studio and interviewing him. So much greatness in one small area…I am sure the resulting glow could be seen from space. READ MORE
