Now that the official release date is here for the book Inside MAD, I can finally share the original piece I did for the book, and my choice for all-time favorite MAD article. First, the original piece: The introduction of the book is written by the very successful comedy film writer, director and producer Judd Apatow. In his intro, he points out that MAD never has done a spoof of any of his movies or TV shows. So, thanks to the efforts of MAD scribe Desmond Devlin and TV/Film writer Paul Rust, we did a special two-pager entitled “A MAD Look Behind the Scenes at… READ MORE

Tomorrow is the official release of MAD‘s follow-up of last year’s big Totally MAD book, entitled Inside MAD. Bad timing, since it’s being released on a Tuesday and it would be much more convenient for me if they released it today on a Monday, so I could post the art I did for it as well as reveal my choice for my favorite all-time MAD article here on “Monday MADness”. I’ll have to talk with the MAD guys about that… Anyway, in this new book they asked the Usual Gang of Idiots what their all-time favorite MAD article was, and then made us explain why.… READ MORE

Q: I have a question about the art of book writing. I own your book “The Mad Art of Caricature” and I love it, but I would like to know how you went to produce it. I understand that you use Photoshop for your work and you incorporated it in the book to show examples, but did the publisher you go through to produce it give you a set template? For example, did the publisher tell you where to place the page numbers and headings you see on each page, or was that part of your design for each individual page? I’m using Illustrator for… READ MORE

Time for another thrilling tale of yesteryear from my days as a theme park caricature artist! I know… you are overwhelmed with anticipation. Try to stay calm. When you draw caricatures from live models for enough years, you are bound to have some moments where you do something dumb and embarrassing with the drawing because you just weren’t paying attention. Those types of things can happen on really busy days when you are going at high speed and are distracted by your environment‚ or just plain not being attentive. There is a certain subset of these instances that I like the call “missing missing limb”… READ MORE

Elizabeth on the Little Mermaid ride at the Magic Kingdom! I posted some time back about the news stories that were circulating concerning some real classy individuals who were hiring “disabled” people to pose as family members when they went to the Disney theme parks so they could juke the system and take advantage of Disney’s generous policies for truly disabled guests. As the parent of an autistic child, I really appreciated Disney’s now former treatment of their disabled visitors, and thought those who both bought and sold a way into it through fraud to be assholes of the nth degree. Sadly, the fraud was… READ MORE

Right now I am winging it somewhere over the Pacific on my way to Australia for the ACA Stanley Awards… full report on that later… so I have to cheat this week and post a sketch from a job. This spot illustration of Dave Navarro as a fortune teller was for Penthouse‘s October issue, which should be out now. Here’s the final: READ MORE
