The Tarantino Story, Part 2

July 30th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

In our previous episode I told the story about how I got hired to do illustrations of a fake TV Guide and MAD cover to be used as props for Quentin Tarantino’s new movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. The adventure continues… Having ended up delivering the images that were going to appear in the film digitally because of a sudden change of shooting dates, I now had plenty of time to do the actual painted versions. These originals were part of the arrangement, and would be owned by Quentin. As it happens, I was going to be in Los Angeles about a month… READ MORE

The Tarantino Story

July 29th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This is going to be a long post because this story took place over the course of 18 months, had not a few twists and turns including my doing the final art TWICE, and ended up being something very different than what it started out to be. Plus I’ve been keeping this a secret for all this time, so I want to tell the story right. Bear with me… In March of 2018 I received an email from Chris Call of Call Props, who was serving as “Property Master” for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Chris had found me via… READ MORE

July 28th, 2019 | Posted in News

My final workshop of 2019, Orlando in Dec, is officially sold out. If you missed out Email me to get added to the waitlist for this or any of my other workshops. I’m starting to look into locations for 2020. I know for sure I’ll be back in LA and in NYC this year, but where else? I’m planning a European leg in 2020, one in the UK and one on the continent, probably in the fall. I need suggestions for US locations. Hit me up in the comments or send me an email. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Depicting MAD’s Alfred?

July 28th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: You’ve mentioned that there are strict rules in regards to the depiction of Alfred on the cover of MAD, insomuch he can’t be depicted side on, or with certain expressions. How come the Australian version of MAD has been able to get away with various artists drawing his face from different angles, and with various expressions on his face? Are non-US MAD magazines allowed more leeway in regards to MAD‘s mascot? A: Apparently they are, given some of the examples you sent me, including this one: By the way, if anyone is interested in seeing a lot of examples of the covers of foreign… READ MORE

Bonus Sketch o’the Week- Hunter S. Thompson!

July 26th, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

This is essentially a recreation of a sketch cover I did at a comic con some years ago of gonzo-journalist Hunter S. Thompson, done as a rare commission for someone after the sketch they originally had purchased ended up missing. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Rutger Hauer!

July 25th, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I was sorry to hear of the passing of actor Rutger Hauer yesterday. “Blade Runner” is probably my favorite Sci-Fi movie of all time, or at least in the top three. He was one of the big reasons. He could have played the role of Roy Batty as a cartoonish villain, but he imbued him with more humanity than most of the human characters in the film had. I know his career was a LOT more than that film, but that was an iconic performance. Anyway he fits perfectly into my “classic action heroes” series except for the hero part… but I don’t care! RIP… READ MORE

“Lousy Law” Sneak Peek

July 24th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD posted a small sneak peek of the “Lousy Law” parody art today on their Instagram. This is a cropped panel from the five page parody of the fictional TV show Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was the star of in the late 50’s/early 60’s. I’ll post more sneak peeks once the issue hit’s the stands (that’s the last time I’ll be able to say THAT) on Aug 6th. READ MORE

Cover for MAD #9

July 23rd, 2019 | Posted in General

Since Quentin Tarantino and Jimmy Kimmel showed this off on the Kimmel show last night, MAD officially released the cover of #9 on Twitter today so I can share it here. Art by me but if you are looking at it and thinking “those look just like Jack Davis feet” you’d be right… I was instructed to channel Jack as part of the whole retro early 60’s vibe. There’s a lot more story to all this but I have to wait until the issue comes out to spill it. READ MORE
