Monday MADness: A MAD Reunion!

October 14th, 2019 | Posted in Monday MADness

Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, MAD writer Desmond Devlin and I thought we’d get together for dinner one night. We decided to call and invite a few of our fellow members of the Usual Gang of Idiots. The next thing you know we had almost 30 people show up. The table only sat six, so it was a little cramped. Actually MAD artist Ed Steckley found us a venue and we had a nice little NYC MAD reunion. Here are some pictures, all courtesy of former MAD assistant art director Nadina Simon! I don’t have pictures of anybody else since I was… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: More Time on Comps or Finals?

October 13th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: If you have finished a job (spoof for MAD, illustration…) did you spend more time on the creative part (composition, sketching) or on the rendering part (inks and coloring)? A: That has a different answer for each job. Some jobs require a lot of preliminary work, especially with a new client. There might be several rounds of conceptual sketches, followed by a tight pencil and revisions until you finally get to the last stage. Other jobs the initial concept is either already worked out as dictated by the client or it just rolls off the end of the pencil and it’s quickly on to… READ MORE

The End of the MAD Movie/TV Parody?

October 11th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD #10 just dropped this week, and it features a TV parody (kind of) in “The Manmaid’s Tale” and a montage of film parodies of horror movie sequels in “Xander and Kam’s Night of the Living Sequels”. Sadly, these might be the last new film or TV show parodies ever printed in MAD Magazine. Over its 67 year run, MAD has been known for several ongoing features that have become an integral part of the magazine: The Fold-In, Spy vs.. Spy, Sergio Aragonés‘ “marginals”, Alfred E. Neuman on the cover, and their spoofs of popular (and sometimes not so popular) films and TV shows. Of… READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday- Supercapers Comic!

October 10th, 2019 | Posted in Illustration Throwback Thursday

Back in 2008 I did a bunch of work on a superhero genre spoof film called “Supercapers” for director/writer/producer/actor Ray Griggs. In early 2009 he had me do a promotional comic book that was a sort of sequel/prequel (time travel story) to the movie that was given out at Wondercon and elsewhere. The 13 page comic was designed, drawn and colored by me, and mostly inked by my pal, comic book superstar Tom Nguyen, although I inked all the faces and two of the full pages. Here is the comic in it’s entirely. You may recognize some of the characters as they are caricatures of… READ MORE

NYCC 2019 Report!

New York Comic Con 2019 is in the books. This is the most exhausting of all the cons I do, but that’s a good thing. I draw non-stop all four days and have a hard time keeping up. I don’t even remember to take pictures of all the commissions and drawings I do. Here are just a couple I did remember to take pics of. Thanks to everyone who came out to say hello! Hope to see you next year! READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- MAD Ending?

October 6th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I heard MAD is ending publication? A: The number one comment from this weekend at New York Comic Con. Here’s what is actually happening with MAD: Until recently, there were three ways for you to get the latest printed issue of MAD Magazine: on newsstands, in comic book stores, and in your maiulbox via subscription. Issue #9, which came out back in July, was the last issue of MAD Magazine to be carried on newsstands. Newsstand distribution of the magazine has ended. Next week MAD #10 will be released. You can get that issue only via subscription or in comic book shops. Issue #10… READ MORE
