This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the pencil sketches of MAD #1’s “Starchie Reconstituted”, an homage and sequel to the brilliant original “Starchie” from MAD #12 by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder, and “Riverdull”, the spoof of the CW’s “Riverdale”. This was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done for MAD. Written by Ian Boothby. Clicky any to embiggen. READ MORE

Since I only need 12 students to fill one of my workshops I very rarely offer a discount on the tuition fees. However, I (very unusually) have had several people either cancel very late or become non-responsive in completing their registration for my Dec 6-8th workshop in Orlando. Since the deposits for those spots had become non-refundable, I can offer them for a $100 discount to new artists. So, here’s a chance to take my workshop at a discount! Grab a spot here! READ MORE

Q: How do you find working with the Copic markers for coloring? They seem to be the popular and recent/newest of the traditional art materials. I remember alcohol markers being around for a long time now but mostly for advertising comps and architecture/landscape renderings. A: I like the Copics a lot, but I only use them for quick style work like I do at comic cons. They are versatile and convenient, but while you can do a lot of blending of colors to get a wider palette, you are essential stuck with the colors and values of the markers themselves. Not all colors blend together… READ MORE

Viz #290 is out and they have once again stooped low enough to have a couple of pieces by me in the issue. One is the color movie poster above. Now, if you don’t know what the “Carry On” movie series is then… join the club. I’d never heard of them but as I didn’t grow up in England why would I have? It’s a series of comedic films all starring virtually the same players that spanned 31 movies from 1958 to 1992 (although 30 of the 31 movies were released between 1958 and 1978, with 1992’s “Carry On Columbus” being a try at reviving… READ MORE

I’m wrapping up my “Magnificent Seven” series with a two for one! Here’s Brad Dexter and (introducing) Horst Buchholtz. These are the last of the Seven, and the least known, so i thought I’d combine them into one. As always, the original is available in the Studio Store. READ MORE

Dustin Hoffman from “Hook”. I ran out of time at New York Comic Con and had to finish this one at home. At least then I was able to actually scan it instead of taking a lame picture with my phone. Brush pens and Copic markers on bristol. READ MORE

Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, MAD writer Desmond Devlin and I thought we’d get together for dinner one night. We decided to call and invite a few of our fellow members of the Usual Gang of Idiots. The next thing you know we had almost 30 people show up. The table only sat six, so it was a little cramped. Actually MAD artist Ed Steckley found us a venue and we had a nice little NYC MAD reunion. Here are some pictures, all courtesy of former MAD assistant art director Nadina Simon! I don’t have pictures of anybody else since I was… READ MORE
