Exclusive Tarantino Blu-ray Mini-MAD!

October 29th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Entertainment Weekly just spilled the beans on another little project I worked on with Quentin Tarantino‘s studio and MAD for the film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, this time something for the Blu-ray release. Like most movies these days, the “home video” release will come in a lot of different packages and flavors. One of them is a “Limited 4K UHD Collector’s Edition” which will feature all the deleted scenes and extra footage of the other releases, but also a 7-inch vinyl record of a recording of Rick Dalton’s “Hullabaloo” TV show guest performance, a poster for the Rick Dalton film “Operazione Dyn-o-mite!” (which… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Finding Your Style?

October 27th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: How can I identify my own drawing style? If I practice copying your drawings or another cartoonist, how will I know what my style is? A: An artist’s “style” is a surprisingly difficult thing to define. It’s easy to see and identify, but not so easy to pigeonhole into where it comes from and how it’s developed, because it just happens and you can’t stop it. In most cases an artist’s style is a natural extension of their drawing, and is a completely unconscious and uncalculated thing. The late, great Jack Davis is a perfect example of this. Everything Jack drew, from a chair to a boat… READ MORE

Workshop Warmups- Bette Davis!

October 23rd, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I’m back to deadlines after my workshop in Austin this past weekend, so this week’s Sketch o’the Week is one of the “Workshop Warmups” we did… screen legend Bette Davis! For these warmups, I ask the class to suggest a subject, then I do an image search for a good picture of that subject and project that on the wall. We all do a 10-15 minute warm up sketch from the pic. I work on a Wacom Cintiq Mobilestudio Pro so they can watch me draw along with them. We usually do 3-4 of these on Saturday morning. I’ll post a few more tomorrow. READ MORE

New Workshops: Tempe, AZ and Chicago, IL!

October 22nd, 2019 | Posted in News

I’ve just booked two more workshops for early 2020: Tempe AZ on March 27-29th and Chicago IL April 17-19th! Although I am still going with the longer days (9-6) on Sat and Sunday to fit MOST of the workshop into the weekend days, Friday night is now going to be an official (but still optional) “Meet and Greet” which will take place from 7pm-10pm at a local restaurant where we will have class introductions, an overview of the workshop, Q&A, and social time. I also still have a few spots available in Burbank and Las Vegas! READ MORE
