Her’s my caricature of today’s subject, Octavia Spencer! Ms. Spencer has almost the exact opposite “under caricature” head shape as yesterday’s subject Jamie Lee Curtis has. Where JLC is long and narrow with close set eyes, Octavia has a squat, very wide head shape with eyes far apart, and a small, short nose. She has very heavy eyelids and a wide grin, with low cheeks and a very small chin. READ MORE

Here’s my drawing of today’s daily Coronacature subject, Jamie Lee Curtis! “Undercaricature” observations: I always start with head shape, and Jamie has a long, narrow face that looks even longer and narrower because of her equally long, slender neck. She has quite a bit of space between her mouth and her nose. Her nose is thin and short. “Surface” observations: She has a wry smile that is upturned more on one side than the other, a little suint to her eyes, and a bit of a furrowed brow. Toon in for tomorrow’s subject in the morning! READ MORE

I decided to do my Bruce Lee drawing early today, so here it is. Bruce’s face is long and lean. He’s got high cheekbones and they are small/knobby as opposed to a more rounded type. He’s got a deceptively big chin, and a small, pursed mouth. The top of his head is larger and his hairstyle makes that even more pronounced. Look for a new subject tomorrow AM! READ MORE

Here’s my caricature of today’s “Daily Coronacature” subject Idris Elba. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery from the virus. My thoughts on this one: Idris has a wide head shape, mainly because there is a lot of space between the outside corners of his eyes and the sides of his head. Ordinarily that would mean his eyes are close together, but they are not. In fact he’s got a pretty wide nose bridge and a lot of space between his eyes as well. The only way to pull that off is to make his eyes small, so you can space them out and still… READ MORE

Here’s my take on yesterday’s subject, Ana de Armas! Ana has a very round face. She has cheekbones of course but her rounder, wide jaw keeps them from protruding out. She has a TEENT TINY chin and a full lipped, pouty mouth that when slightly open gives her a buck-toothed sort of look. The eye on the right seems more open than the one on the left because the upper eyelid is a little taller and larger, and her eyebrow on that side also has a bit of a lift to it. She has a deceptively long nose but it is very narrow and pointy.… READ MORE

It looks like the denizens of Planet Earth are looking at weeks, perhaps longer, of borderline house quarantine over the coronavirus pandemic. Like so many, I’ve seen my income basically grind to a halt. My theme park operations are closed, upcoming workshops all cancelled/postponed, freelance work on hold. Times are tough. I have decided to continue to offer the comic-con level commissions and items I only had available for a few days last week during my “Virtual ECCC Artist’s Alley Table” on an ongoing basis while the Coronavirus continues to keep us all at home and away from the rest of life. With money tight… READ MORE

Here’s my take on out first “Daily Coronacature” subject: Eugene Levy! I promised some process stuff: Every caricature has two elements to it that contribute to exaggerating and capturing the subject. One is the “structural” element, or what I call the “under caricature”. This is the physical nature of the face, meaning the bones, meat and actual physical attributes. That sounds like a “duh” statement… after all what else do you look at when you are are trying to determine what you are going to exaggerate in a caricature? Quite a lot actually. The “under caricature” is the stuff that doesn’t change much with expression.… READ MORE

I got a great idea emailed to me by a gent named Terry Elliott yesterday that may be a fun way to combat the depressing COVID-19 craziness the whole world is dealing with right now. Since we are all holed up in our homes for a few weeks, his idea was for me to post pictures of a subject for a caricature every day. Anybody who is so inclined can do a caricature of the subject and post it either to the Tom’s Daily Coronoacature Facebook group and/or on Instagram using the tag #tomsdailycoronacature. The next day I will post my caricature of the subject… READ MORE
