Holy Veeblefetzer, Batfink! Our awesome backers just got us past the $60,000 mark on our CLAPTRAP book campaign in Indiegogo, unlocking our penultimate stretch goal. We’ve only got FOUR MORE DAYS to go on Desmond Devlin and my Indiegogo campaign for CLAPTRAP, our book of MAD style movie parodies. Here’s another example of the kind of sketches I’m going to be doing in the book for those who contribute at the “Schmendrick” level and up (Yes, we’re doing a spoof of fan favorite and universally acclaimed (yet never spoofed in MAD) movie “Blade Runner”.) With Desmond Devlin and I doing our CLAPTRAP book project to keep the movie parody comics genre alive, I thought we’d take a look at my very first movie parody in MAD. This spoof of the four time Academy Award winning film “Traffic” was written by Arnie Kogen, and appeared in MAD #405, May 2001. Q: Did you have the chance to meet Don Martin? He was a bit of a hero of mine when I was a kid in the seventies. Have you met many of the earlier “Usual Gang of Idiots”? A: Don Martin was also one of my favorites as a kid reading MAD in the 70’s! Sadly, no, I never got to meet him. He left MAD in 1987, so he was long gone by the time I started with MAD. I did these Donald Trump “postage stamp” illustrations for a client this fall. They were supposed to be used by “The Lincoln Project” somehow, but I don’t think they ever did whatever they were planning on using them for.
